Job Summary
The Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a Cellular Pathology Laboratory Manager. This is an exciting opportunity to join a professional and well-established team based at the Royal United Hospital Bath. The service provides Histopathology, Non-Gynae Cytology (including andrology), and mortuary services to BaNES, Wiltshire, and North Somerset.
The Cellular Pathology Laboratory processes 34,000 histopathology requests, 22,000 immunocytochemistry slides, 2,000 non-gynaecological specimens, and carries out 130 post mortems per annum. The department transitioned to UKAS 15189 (2022) in August 2024, and the mortuary is licensed by the HTA.
Main Duties of the Job
The post holder will be joining us at an exciting time and has the chance to deliver service change and quality improvements through the implementation of a Managed Equipment Service. The department has recently gone live with the Fujifilm Synapse system for digital reporting and is implementing Ibex AI for prostate biopsies and transitioning to digital MDT meetings. The system is fully integrated with the Ultra 4.5 LIMS system.
The department is active in training new Biomedical Scientists and holds IBMS Training Laboratory status for registration and specialist portfolio, histopathology dissection, and supports further development opportunities for all staff.
Applicants for the laboratory Manager post will need to have HCPC registration, an FIBMS or MSc, plus at least 5 years' experience of working at a senior level in Cellular Pathology, as well as a management and leadership qualification.
You will be part of the Pathology leadership team including the Clinical Director, Pathology Services Manager, and Blood Sciences Laboratory Manager, and together you will create and deliver the strategic vision for Pathology. This is an exciting time for pathology with many transformational projects, and we would expect you to play a major part in these. We are part of the West of England Pathology Network and have a focused programme of work on Histopathology.

Qualifications
Essential
* Biomedical Science (Hons) degree (or equivalent)
* HCPC registered BMS
* Fellow of the IBMS or relevant MSc.
Desirable
* Management qualification e.g. DMS, CMS, MBA.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential
* Detailed practical and theoretical knowledge of the clinical specialty.
* Extensive and up-to-date managerial and/or supervisory experience in a clinical laboratory.
* Detailed knowledge of new technology in discipline.
* Strong influencing skills to enable the delivery of changes, including challenging clinical practice & performance.
Desirable
* Evidence of courses/conferences in digitalisation, pathology networks, service developments/QIPP.
