Job overview
This position requires the applicant to have exemplary clinical skills and is able to autonomously manage and care for stable patients as well as co-managing complex glaucoma patients within a hospital setting.
You will be seeing a wide range of patients such as new, treatment concordance, phasing, and follow-up patients.
The Glaucoma Service is comprised of Glaucoma Consultants, Doctors, Specialised Glaucoma Practitioners (Nurses, Optometrists, Orthoptists), Ophthalmic Technicians, and Perimetrists assigned to glaucoma clinics in conjunction with the glaucoma consultants.
Applicants must have a Healthcare degree and be registered with the appropriate bodies and must have advanced knowledge and skills in managing glaucoma patients. Previous hospital experience would be an advantage. The job would be subject to criminal records check, references, and a health check.
Main duties of the job
1. To work as an autonomous glaucoma practitioner as part of the glaucoma care team, referring to service protocols set at GSTT in accordance with NICE guidelines.
2. To provide appropriate care within specialist glaucoma clinics and in areas of own expertise.
3. To assess, diagnose, formulate, and review treatment plans.
4. To instruct patients or parents/guardians of patients on a continuous course of treatment.
5. To regularly review glaucoma policies and implement changes with the head of Lead Glaucoma Nurse Specialist.
6. Liaise with Lead Glaucoma Nurse Specialist regarding any problems with service delivery.
7. To be responsible for administration associated with the glaucoma service.
8. To keep and maintain appropriate records at all times on open eyes.
9. To be responsible for the safe keeping and maintenance of all equipment belonging to the service, including calibration of devices.
10. Act as a mentor for other professionals within the service and maintain a high standard of professional care and expertise.
11. To undertake a comprehensive ophthalmic examination including goldmann tonometry, gonioscopy, pachymetry, and optic disc assessment.
12. To assess patient results and act when they show instability or new clinical signs.
Person specification
Qualification and Knowledge
* Bachelor of Science in Optometry or equivalent qualification
* Registered on the General Optical Council (GOC) NMC or HCPC
* Independent prescribing certification and registration
Experience
* Significant post-registration experience including working in glaucoma clinics in a hospital setting
* Experience of training and supporting junior staff and students
* Has presentation skills/experience - computer skills Word, Excel, and Outlook
* Audit and research experience
* Demonstrates understanding of clinical governance and trust values
* Experience of working as part of a team, uni-professional and multiprofessional
Skills
* Clinical skills - able to perform goldmann applanation tonometry, pachymetry, gonioscopy, optic disc assessment with volk lens
* Autonomous working and use of initiative, guided by NICE/Glaucoma ophthalmology guidelines
* Time management skills with ability to organize, plan, and prioritise workload
* Ability to analyse and prioritise complex medical information to help devise appropriate specialist care plans
* Experience using Epic
