We're seeking an experienced and innovative Senior Cyber Security Operations Engineer to secure and maintain the security of all of the University’s infrastructure, applications, and technology services.
As IT Services, we provide all the core technology services for the University: system administration for hosts running Linux and Windows Server, in-house software development, network and telephony infrastructure, management of end-user devices, project management, and business analysis.
We have over 1,200 virtual machines, over 200 physical hosts providing services, our new 'Viking' HPC facility, and ~2.5PB of storage platforms. This infrastructure supports 8300 managed PCs, our critical business, teaching, and research-related systems, including HR, Finance, and Student Records systems, our Virtual Learning Environment, as well as over 130 bespoke applications and integrations which glue everything together.
Role
The successful candidate will have technical ownership of some of our cyber security tooling and will have opportunities to enhance and develop those services to ensure the protection of our networks, services, and information is up to date and meeting the demands of the threats facing Higher Education.
Members of this team are technical security specialists with hands-on engineering roles, responsible for developing, implementing, supporting, and maintaining cyber security relevant to our infrastructure and application suite. The successful candidate will lead collaboration with all other IT Services teams to secure both on-premise and cloud-based infrastructure and applications.
You will report to the Head of Cyber Security and be part of the senior cyber security team, acting as a delegate for the Head of Cyber Security in both internal and external matters. Additionally, you will lead and mentor the Security Operations team, including engineers, analysts, and industry placement team members. You will also have opportunities to participate in guest lectures for students and collaborate with academics on securing research and teaching initiatives.
We are dedicated to developing our staff and investing in the future. This role requires cyber security experience and offers opportunities to specialize in one or more areas, where a high degree of trust is essential. Security is a constantly developing and evolving field, making this an excellent opportunity for career advancement.
There is an expectation that the post holder will be available on campus in York at least two days per week to work with colleagues and provide hands-on support.
