Head of Service for Trauma & Orthopaedics

The Head of Service role is required to provide leadership for the Service and ensure effective management and support for staff. There is a responsibility for effective clinical governance arrangements and a requirement to provide advice to the Clinical Chair and Executive Medical Director on matters of clinical policy and practice, staffing, education and training.
The Head of Service will be required to work in partnership with other team members in the service, to provide accountability for the quality and performance of the Service.
The successful candidate must attend mandatory introductory training courses, including the following:
* Management of sickness and absence
* Any other relevant training in line with role.
Main Duties of the Job
1. To provide leadership to all staff within the Service, achieved through effective governance arrangements linking with both the Trust and Divisional Clinical Governance structures.
2. To ensure effective arrangements for patient safety are in place across the Service.
3. With support from the Divisional Management team, be accountable for the service in terms of:
1. Clinical performance
2. Contractual performance
3. Operational performance
4. With the support of the Divisional Management team, lead the strategic development of the service.
5. Represent the Service at relevant meetings both internally and external to the Trust and participate in the agreeing/reviewing of key performance indicators.
6. Attend multi-disciplinary team meetings to actively promote effective multi-disciplinary working and collaborative working, ensure effective communication and work in partnership with other teams to achieve shared goals.
7. Raise the profile of the Service within the Trust, with the aim of it being viewed as a service that delivers excellent care to patients by proactively planning and ensuring the delivery of a high-quality service for patients.
8. Attend relevant senior management meetings and represent the view of the Service.

Person Specification
Knowledge Requirements
* Evidence of innovations and achievements in clinical practice
Qualifications
* Registered Practitioner (NMC/GMC)
* Formal leadership and management training
* Post-Graduate Diploma or MSc or equivalent higher professional qualifications in Specialist area
Experience
* Substantial post registration experience to include management/leadership experience
* Experience in audit, policy development, education and training
* Publications
* Research experience
