Mid Yorkshire Orthopaedic services serves a population of 500,000 in West Yorkshire, England. The department has subspecialties of lower limb arthroplasty surgery, soft tissue knee surgery, foot and ankle surgery, paediatric orthopaedics and upper limb surgery. Mid Yorkshire Hospitals also delivers a 24 hours consultant led trauma service, our multi-professional teams co-ordinate the care for patients with trauma injuries.
We are seeking a Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to join our team of 18 Orthopaedic Consultants providing a range of acute and elective services.
The post is predominantly focused on Upper Limb Surgery and the candidate should have a sub speciality interest in Hand and Wrist surgery, and ideally will have completed a one year fellowship scheme focusing on this sub-specialty. The candidate must also be able to demonstrate in depth training in trauma surgery.
The post will be mainly based at Pinderfields and Pontefract Hospitals however the appointed consultant must be willing to work at the other hospital site (Dewsbury Hospital).
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the post will include:
1. Treatment of hand and wrist conditions, including both elective and trauma conditions.
2. Taking on complex wrist fracture referrals from other colleagues and continuing ongoing care.
3. Delivery of care in the out-patient, theatre, and ward based settings.
4. Outpatients will be both elective and fracture clinics.
* Successful candidate will work in a trauma-team over a regular specified 36 hour period. The teams will cover each others on call commitments and back fill trauma lists / clinics when colleagues are on leave.
* Keep patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) informed about their condition.
* Involve patients (and/or carers if appropriate) in decision making about their treatment.
* Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out from time to time by the General Medical Council (GMC) and comply in particular with the GMCs guidance on Good Medical Practice as amended or substituted from time to time.
Urgent and Emergency Care duties including out-of-hours on-call schedules will take due account of the provisions of working time regulations and safe working.
On-call duties are currently shared with 12 other colleagues on a 1:12 basis currently assessed as 1 PA.

* Equivalent two years within orthopaedics dealing with Hand and wrist and Upper limb
* Logbook evidence of high volume general trauma as well as complex wrist trauma.
* Upper limb with Hand and wrist Fellowship
* Able to treat complex wrist fractures surgically

* Extensive Elective Experience in complex hand/wrist upper limb conditions
* In depth experience in managing all facets upper limb trauma
* Emphasis on Wrist Trauma, but also Shoulder and Elbow trauma as well as simple/ emergent general orthopaedic trauma Hip fractures, long bone fractures, initial management of fractures/dislocations of other joints.
* Management & leadership experience
* Evidence of involvement in teaching and training in Upper limb surgery
* Interest in developing / improving trauma and elective pathways
* Evidence of personal contribution to service development in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery
* Demonstrates awareness of the current UK Healthcare system and the need to develop services in line with current policy
* Computer literate
* Specific educational interests and evidence of educational ideas or project work.
* Experience of working as a consultant/locum consultant is desirable.
