The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is the world’s leading independent authority on global security issues, providing information and analysis on a wide range of international security and geopolitical risk questions. The Institute conducts research on the problems of conflict, however caused, that may have a significant military dimension, and analyses international trends, including economic developments, which may have strategic implications. The IISS is headquartered in London and has international offices in Berlin, Singapore, Bahrain and Washington DC.
An opportunity has arisen in the London office for a Research Analyst for Defence Economics to join the Defence Economics and Procurement team within the IISS Defence and Military Analysis Programme. Suitable areas of specialisation for candidates would be defence economics; or quantitative military capability assessments; or defence procurement analysis.
Responsibilities:
* Collection and assessment of data on defence economics and defence procurement. This will include the sourcing and transcribing of open-source budget documentation and tracking procurement programmes according to a pre-defined model.
* Investigate public spending data. In discussion with the IISS defence economist and Senior DMAP staff, improve methodologies for our defence economics analysis.
* Support DMAP research and consultancy projects that require defence economic or procurement data or analysis.
Requirements:
* A masters degree in a relevant field such as international relations, strategic studies, war studies or economics, OR a relevant professional background in the armed forces or defence intelligence.
* Proven experience in policy-relevant research and publication on defence and military matters.
* Interest and expertise in the analysis of defence economics and defence industrial trends.
* Highly numerate and able to work with vast datasets and manipulate them.
* Excellent command of spoken and written English. Additional language skills highly desirable.
