Job Description
The West of Scotland Archaeology Service (WoSAS) is seeking a motivated Senior Archaeologist to join its Glasgow based service.
WoSAS (hosted by Glasgow City Council) serves a large part of the Central Belt, South Lanarkshire, Ayrshire and Argyll, dealing with a wide range of archaeological sites of all periods in varied landscapes extending from the inner city to the Inner Hebrides, and from the Southern Uplands to Loch Lomond and The Trossachs.
The Service provides expert archaeological advice to planning colleagues on spatial planning and development management, handling a varied workload including pre-application discussions, development applications of all sizes, and appeals. You will also monitor archaeological fieldwork on consented developments and so contribute to the delivery of sustainable development and new archaeological research.
You will represent the partner authorities in various fora, help to enhance the WoSAS Historic Environment Record, and provide archaeological information to researchers and the public.
The ideal candidate will have a degree in a relevant discipline, accredited membership of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA), proficient IT skills, excellent communication and reporting skills, and substantial archaeological fieldwork or senior curatorial planning advice experience. A good understanding of the statutory planning system and current practices in archaeology is essential.
Desirable criteria include project planning knowledge, understanding of Scotland's history and prehistory, and experience working with heritage agencies and voluntary organisations. If you have the necessary experience and skills, we would be delighted to receive your application.
