Job Title: Waste Supervisor/ Recycling Supervisor
Team: Recycling Centre Service - WMU
Hours: 40 hours per week (alternate weekend working required)
Contract Type: Temp to Perm (12 weeks Temp)
Purpose of the Role
The role involves working closely with colleagues in a small team to manage multiple Recycling Centres and Reuse shops within the county. Key duties and responsibilities include:
· Ensuring compliance with all applicable legislation, including Environmental and Health & Safety requirements.
· Promoting continuous improvement in customer service, recycling performance, waste reduction, and reuse.
· Traveling around the county to provide visible leadership to remote teams and conducting frequent inspections relating to service provision and compliance.
· Engaging with the public in person, on the phone, and through written communication.
· Investigating accidents, incidents, complaints, and customer inquiries, providing full and reasoned responses.
· Challenging service users who may fraudulently access free public services.
· Making reasoned and evidenced decisions on service provision during weekends on behalf of senior management.
· Using initiative and creativity to solve complex problems within the framework of applicable legislation and council policy.
· Maintaining infrastructure, plant, and machinery at recycling centres.
· Communicating effectively with contractors to ensure continuous service delivery.
· Identifying and placing orders for goods and services related to the role and managing invoice payment approvals.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
· Leadership and management skills in dealing with front-line staff.
· Experience managing Health and Safety, preferably backed by a relevant qualification.
· Proven ability to improve services by managing a team effectively.
· The ability to interact with the public and communicate policies and legislative restrictions clearly, respecting Hertfordshire's diverse population.
· Proven experience managing operations similar to Recycling Centres.
· Daily access to a vehicle and the ability to travel across the county as required.
Desirable Qualifications and Skills
· Level 4 COTC qualification relevant to managing civic amenity sites (HCC will provide training during probation if not already held).
· IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH qualification.
· Experience in the waste industry, including legislation and operations.
· Understanding of working within a political environment.
