The main site of HMP Rochester is located on the site of the eponymous “borstal” and many of the original structures and buildings remain, including the recognisable clock tower and gate lodge. The prison marked its 150-year anniversary this year, in commemoration of its rich and vibrant history, initially as a young offenders’ institute and in later years, an adult only establishment. It has seen numerous extensions over the years, making it one of the larger prisons in the area, with sprawling grounds and a wide range of facilities. Having recently merged with the smaller adjacent prison, formerly the youth justice facility known as Cookham Wood, Rochester has undergone an exciting period of expansion that has created new opportunities for both staff and the prison population. HMP Rochester’s focus is firmly fixed on reducing reoffending and preventing future victims of crime by preparing offenders for their release through accredited intervention programmes, skill and vocational based training and education, in a pro social environment. Both sites offer a multitude of opportunities for offenders to engage in purposeful activity across many areas. Courses at HMP Rochester include Maths, English, IT, catering, art, mentoring and training, construction skills and much more. Prisoners are supported to gain qualifications and to develop the skills and knowledge that prepare them for a productive, crime-free life outside the establishment and our staff are an essential part of the journey. The education delivery hours are Monday to Thursday 8.45am – 11.30am, 1.45pm – 4.30pm and on Fridays 8.45am – 11.30am, with staff working on-site 8:15am – 4:45pm each day and 8:15am – 1:15pm on Fridays.
