Job Title: Waste Supervisor Starting Salary: £40,043 - £43,763 Hours: 40.0 Location: Hertfordshire Contract Type: Permanent Directorate: Growth & Environment About the team As part of the Waste Management Unit, fulfilling the statutory duties of a waste disposal authority, the Recycling Centre service in Hertfordshire receives c1.5million visitors each year and handles c80,000 tonnes of household waste across a network of 16 Recycling Centres. About the role As an individual experienced in managing and motivating remote teams to achieve outstanding results and high levels of customer service, you will manage Recycling Centres in line with Health and Safety, Waste industry (EA) and other applicable legislations. Working as part of a small team in the Recycling Centre service you will manage and continuously improve the provision of this statutory service to the residents of Hertfordshire. Working closely with colleagues in a small team to manage a number of Recycling Centres and Reuse shops within the county. Duties and responsibilities will include: Ensuring compliance with all applicable legislation including Environmental and Health & Safety requirements Promote continuous improvement in levels of customer service as well as recycling performance, waste reduction and increasing Reuse. Travel round the county providing visible leadership to remote teams and conducting frequent inspections relating to service provision and compliance. Dealing with members of the public in person, on the phone and via written communications. Investigate accidents, incidents, complaints and customer enquiries to provide a full and reasoned response and resolution. Challenging service users who may be fraudulently accessing free public services and at the expense of tax payers. Make reasoned and evidenced decisions regarding service provision on weekends on behalf of senior management. Using initiative and creativity to solve complex problems within the framework of applicable legislation and council policy. Responsible for the effective maintenance of infrastructure, plant and machinery at recycling centres Use clear and effective communications with contractors to ensure continuous service delivery. Identifying the need for and placing orders for goods and services related to the service and goods receipting for invoice payment approval. About you As someone engaged in ensuring a compliant and positive working environment across a diverse and dispersed front line team everyday will present different challenges. Working closely with different members of the Recycling Centre and Reuse Team, the Waste Management Unit and colleagues from across HCC you will have the opportunity to help deliver and shape a service that many residents rely upon as well as helping the Council protect the environment for future generations. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate: Leadership and management skills in dealing with front line staff Experience in managing Health and Safety, preferably backed up with a relevant qualification Proven ability to improve services through managing a team of staff Ability to deal with members of the public and communicate policy and legislative restrictions in clear terms acknowledging the diversity of Hertfordshire residents. Proven ability to effectively and efficiently manage operations similar to a Recycling Centre. Daily access to a vehicle in essential and the ability to drive around the county as required.
