Productive Workshop Chargehand
This is a role for a senior Technician currently in a Supervisory role who is looking to take their career to the next level. You will be responsible for the productivity and overall efficiencies of a busy workshop.
Your remit will be to oversee the day-to-day activity and ensure that jobs are allocated via a card system to the Vehicle Engineers.
You will also be working on the company's outstanding fleet of high-spec municipal vehicles, so current mechanical experience is still very much required for the role. It is anticipated that your day-to-day duties will be 60/40 on the spanners.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Making sure that the work has been carried out to the correct specifications and within the time frames.
2. Liaising with the Parts Department to ensure the correct equipment is being used to carry out the repairs.
3. Overseeing routine (and preventative) maintenance.
4. Preparing vehicles for MOT.
5. Scheduling servicing to DVSA standards.
6. Conducting 6 (or 8) weekly inspections.
7. Correcting running defects.
8. Performing chassis and fabrication work.
9. Handling hydraulics and pneumatics.
10. Improving vehicle standards.
11. Conducting electrical and wiring inspections and corrections.
This role would suit someone with experience in a similar role within an HGV or Council Fleet workshop environment and good commercial vehicle knowledge from a technical perspective.
It is critical that you have very good people skills, as you will be liaising with internal and external stakeholders, sometimes in a high-pressure environment, so a cool head is required at all times.
The type of vehicles worked on range from heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), road tankers, gritters, RCVs, refuse vehicles, and road sweepers. The Fitters under your guidance are highly skilled, and they will be looking after a mix of diesel, hybrid, and fully electric vehicles, so it is important that you are up to date with modern vehicle technologies.
Ideally, you will be fully qualified (City & Guilds), NVQ, or equivalent. It is also important that you are used to vehicle transaction systems and have solid IT skills.
