The Occupational Therapy team at Great Ormond Street Hospital are looking for a Band 7 Occupational Therapist who has experience of working with children with complex physical disabilities. Clinically, the post holder will provide expert occupational therapy input into the Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) service, which is nationally commissioned and one of the NHS's highly specialist services providing input to children and families across the south east. The role of the Occupational Therapist within this service is to assess occupational performance, support families and local teams with handling, and to support modifications to activities to reduce fracture risk.
Working in one of four nationally commissioned highly specialised services in England, the successful candidate must be able to travel as part of the role, and working flexibly is therefore required. Expert knowledge of child development is essential, whilst previous experience of working in community services would be useful as there is a large liaison aspect to this role. The ability to promote a functional approach that both enables engagement in meaningful occupations and promotes participation is a necessity.
Main duties of the job
The role involves provision of occupational therapy assessment and intervention within the OI service. This highly specialist service requires expert knowledge and experience of working with children and young people with a diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta, whose physical difficulties impact their ability to engage in school and home-based occupations. The ability to liaise with and support local services to provide evidence-based follow-up interventions is therefore essential. The ability to promote a functional approach that both enables engagement in meaningful occupations and promotes participation is also required.
You will be responsible for providing intervention that supports and enables these children and young people to engage in chosen occupations as much as possible, and to utilise a variety of therapeutic approaches to promote motivation and wider participation. The role also includes working with families to support their understanding of their child's condition and the impact it may have on their everyday life.
We are looking for an experienced occupational therapist who is working at an Enhanced Level, with the ability to offer evidence-based assessments and intervention to children and young people with OI. We need a team player who can work collaboratively as part of a strong multidisciplinary team. In return, our service offers the opportunity to be part of a world-renowned tertiary hospital that provides cutting-edge treatment and interventions.
