Job Overview
Are you a therapy support worker with an interest in nutrition and dietetics? Or a Dietetic Assistant looking for a different experience in the community? We are looking for an enthusiastic, organised and self-driven individual to join our Nutrition and Dietetic Inpatient team to support our Community Hospitals.
This post will involve delivering dietetic care independently and tasks as delegated by the community dietitians to assist in providing a quality dietetic service to inpatients at two community hospitals. The post would also involve carrying out staff training around the use of MUST, audit work and assisting in service development.
You will work alongside our team of Dietitians and specialist Nutrition Nurse, covering Mosely Hall Hospital and West Health Hospital, where we support patients with their nutrition to ensure they are well nourished whilst recovering and undergoing rehabilitation.
The wider Dietetic team provides a comprehensive community citywide service for the Birmingham population and employs over 50 staff. We also support the training of dietetic students (A, B & C placements), from both Coventry & Birmingham Universities.
Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
To work under the dietetic team to improve the nutritional intakes of patients identified by the dietitian both within the community hospital setting, care homes and patients in their own homes. To liaise with dietitians, nursing, catering and housekeeping to improve nutritional screening, basic nutritional care planning, feeding practice and food service delivery at ward level. To deliver training and education on nutritional screening, good feeding practice and in raising the importance of nutrition amongst ward staff and other care staff external to Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust. To deliver patient group talks following an agreed session plan. To use knowledge and behaviour change skills to help patients cope with their condition, by overcoming practical and emotional barriers to improve their nutritional intake.
Person specification
Qualifications / Training
* Level 3 NVQ qualification (or equivalent) in a related subject (health or food)
* GCSE English & Mathematics at Grade C or above
* Ability to complete relevant work based nutrition training programme.
Experience
* Significant experience of working in a caring environment with adults
* Evidence of working as part of a team
* Experience of working with the public, preferably in the NHS and in an in-patient environment
Skills & Knowledge
* Evidence of ability to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills for both individuals and groups
* Demonstration of awareness of diversity and evidence of an ability to work within a multicultural setting
* An ability to use information technology to maximise personal effectiveness, or willingness to develop these skills
* Ability to plan and manage own time
* Demonstrates a health and nutrition interest particularly in relation to the elderly
