Job overview
To contribute to the provision of the Dental Psychology Service, including highly specialist assessment, treatment, planning, and implementation and monitoring of outcomes.
The post-holder will provide clinical supervision to more junior psychologists and consultation to colleagues. They will undertake service evaluation, audit, and research and policy development. They will work as an autonomous professional within BPS and HCPC guidelines and codes of conduct and, guided by principles and policies or procedures of the service, take responsibility for their work with the support of their clinical supervisor.
They will work across a diverse range of services in the Dental Institute. Allocation of their time between services will be guided by more senior psychologists in the Institute, commensurate with the needs of each service.
The post-holder may be required to spend some of their time at Queen Mary Hospital, Sidcup.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will hold a diverse caseload and provide psychological interventions in the areas of trauma, anxiety, appearance-related distress and dental treatment-related phobias. They will work closely with surgeons, dentists and nurses to provide excellent multidisciplinary care to patients in KCH Dental Hospital.
They will also be required to develop existing psychology pathways with other members of the Dental Psychology Service, to supervise qualified psychologists and trainees and to contribute to research and audit projects, for which they will receive protected time.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* To provide highly specialist expertise in the psychological care of patients attending the Dental Hospital and their families and carers
* To provide specialist psychological assessments, clinical formulations and to select and deliver evidence based psychological treatments, in a diverse range of services across the Dental Hospital
* To work as an independent and autonomous professional, within BPS guidelines and the policies and procedures of the service, taking full responsibility for own work including treatment and discharge decisions
* To assess and monitor risk and draw up appropriate risk management plans
* To liaise with referrers, GPs and other professionals in order to develop and review care plans
* To provide culturally appropriate psychological interventions with carers or families of referred clients when required, to ensure that all psychology services provided are acceptable and accessible to the diverse communities served by the Dental Hospital
* To provide specialist psychological consultation to multi-disciplinary colleagues
* To contribute to the consultation and engagement of service users in planning and delivering services which meet the needs of local communities
* With management support as appropriate, to be responsible for the allocation of work and clinical supervision of the Band 7 practitioner psychologist
* To supervise trainee applied psychologists
* To receive regular clinical and professional supervision from a senior psychologist, according to BPS, HCPC and Trust guidelines
* To communicate skilfully and sensitively highly complex and sensitive information with patients, carers, colleagues in the multi-disciplinary team and other health professionals, taking account of sensory and cultural barriers to communication.
Person specification
Education and qualifications
* Entry-level qualification in Applied Psychology (professional Doctorate, or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level additional)
* Registered with the HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist, and evidence of continuing professional development as required by the HCPC
* Evidence of clinical supervision training post doctoral qualification
* Evidence of further professional training in a specific psychological approach to practitioner or accredited level
Knowledge and experience
* Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients with a range of psychological needs including those of a complex nature
* Experience that supports working with, and addressing issues of, diversity within local communities. This may have been gained through work, research, volunteering and/or lived experience
* Experience of receiving clinical supervision across a range of client needs
* Further specialist experience through having received a minimum of 50 hours of clinical supervision of working as a qualified practitioner psychologist
* Experience of working with clients with physical health difficulties
* Experience of delivering structured psychoeducational groups to patients and/or caregivers
* Experience of providing clinical supervision
* Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological assessment and therapies in physical health
* Knowledge of policy and legislation and its implications for both clinical practice and professional management in relation to clients in mental health, child and adult protection, and equalities
* Evidence of continuing professional development, as recommended by the BPS and HCPC
* Experience of working in an acute hospital setting
* Experience of working with clients experiencing chronic and/or orofacial pain
* Experience of working with clients experiencing appearance-related distress
* Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies for patients attending dental treatment
Skills and Competencies
* Experience of developing and carrying out research projects and audit
