Principal Environmental Protection Officer - Ref: EE12024
G11: £47,754 - £52,805 per annum.
As part of re-alignment of our Environmental Protection Team, we require an experienced officer who is conversant with all current aspects of local authority environmental protection work. The position involves supervision of staff; representation of the service and the council as necessary; taking a lead officer specialist role for example in either air quality, noise and vibration, ground contamination, planning impacts or IPPC regulation; and engagement with key partners and stakeholders.
The Environmental Protection team essentially deals with industrial pollution matters along with some commercial related aspects, including appraisals of planning development and routine regulatory functions.
This is a key post that assists the Environmental Protection Manager, for whom you will deputise as required. Strong technical, written, presentation and inter-personal skills are necessary.
The Role
The Environmental Protection team is committed to delivering a proficient service and values high technical competency. The compliment of staff comprises professional officers that conduct duties based on environmental regulation and safeguarding the public, ground contamination, air quality/air pollution, acoustics and appraisal of impacts associated with new and altered development related to these themes.
We are looking for a person who is conversant in undertaking all relevant regulatory duties, who is able to operate both autonomously and collaboratively with partners and stakeholders.
The role involves supporting others in the team and, where required, assisting with their on-going professional development and continued updating of skill-sets.

The Ideal Candidate
A confident, good communicator at all levels, with notable industrial and commercial experience in the field of UK local authority environmental protection work, and which has involved dealing with:
1. air pollution/air quality
2. acoustics, noise and vibration
3. ground contamination
4. statutory nuisances
5. preparation of detailed consultation responses in regard to planning applications and Building Regulations for environmental protection purposes
6. Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (A2 and Part B processes)
7. environmental information requests
8. dealing with members of the public, local politicians, businesses and other internal and external professionals
9. working under pressure and meeting deadlines
10. providing clear advice and recommendations in a tactful manner to specialist and non-specialist persons
11. modern IT and software
You should have first-rate knowledge of legislation and current issues concerning environmental protection, experience of supervising or managing staff and experience in leading on work projects and initiatives concerning environmental protection.
Working Arrangements
Walsall Council is committed to a blended working approach, providing flexibility between office and home-based working that meets the diverse needs of staff, the service and our customers. This will require office working on two or three days per week, site work and working from home.
This is a full time position and can periodically involve working outside normal weekday hours, attending committees and representing the service.

Qualifications and Experience:
1. Diploma/Degree or in a relevant subject along with a specialist qualification and significant experience demonstrated of both people management and relevant technical roles.
2. Track record of, and commitment, to continuous personal and professional development.
3. Membership of an appropriate Professional Body e.g. IoA, IEnvSc, CIEH, IAQM.
