Job overview
The HCOP Specialty is looking to recruit Locum Consultants in Geriatric and General Medicine with a responsibility in Acute Geriatric Medicine for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Both full and part time hours are available.
Working in the Heath Care of Older People (HCOP) specialty the post-holders will be able to discuss their job plans. They are reviewed annually. They are likely to include some of the following:
* Share consultant responsibility on 1 of our 8 acute/subacute HCOP wards, improve our commitment to frail older people within the acute medical and frailty pathway.
* Cover Older Person Assessment Unit (OPAU) and Ward D57 (Older Person Admissions Unit).
* Share support to Community geriatrics and various surgical liaison services (including outliers).
Main duties of the job
The role of the acute medical Geriatrician has been developed over the last 5 years to provide specialist HCOP medical input to frail older people within the acute medical admission pathway. Our experience shows that patients who are on the Geriatric Assessment Unit, working with a multidisciplinary team results in more frail older people being discharged earlier in the pathway.
We in-reach into the Emergency Department and work alongside the emergency physicians in identifying frailty at the front door. We have also been part of the Acute Frailty Network and labelled a beacon site by them. We are expanding our team to enable us to deliver this service more consistently across the week. We expect these roles to develop and change over the coming months as the acute medical pathways are reviewed so they are better able to meet the increasing demands being put on them.
Working for our organisation
The specialty of HCOP sits managerially within the Division of Medicine alongside Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Stroke Medicine, Diabetic Medicine, Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. The Division of Medicine is split into 3 directorates. HCOP sits within the Integrated Care Directorate with Stroke.
NUH is a Centre of Excellence in the clinical care, teaching and research of Health Care of Older People. We have developed a broad range of subspecialties to meet patient need across the health community and our aim is to ensure that this continues.

This commitment may be provided by the appointee or shared across the Service.
Any Locum Consultant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post on a part-time basis; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.
All new Locum Consultants can access a mentor within the department or an external mentor can be arranged. There is a new consultants group in NUH to support new consultants.
