Job Description:
Leonardo is a world-class defence technology company in the heart of Edinburgh. We create cutting-edge Radars for the Eurofighter Typhoon, as well as Maritime and Airborne surveillance systems. We are also investors in innovation, undertaking all our own research to fuel our future products. We are recruiting talented, motivated engineers to join our growing team. We offer roles at all levels to match your skills and experience including Hardware Engineer, Senior Hardware Engineer, Principal Hardware Engineer, and Lead Hardware Engineer.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Principal Hardware Engineer to join the PSU Core Delivery Team (CDT) in Edinburgh. The Team provides expert advice, guidance, design, and governance throughout the full lifecycle of all projects on site for matters pertaining to Power.
What sort of work would I be involved in?
As an experienced PSU design engineer, your primary role is to lay the groundwork for the future Power Systems we require in the near and far term. PSU topology analysis and associated new technologies in Energy Storage and Energy Conservation, including limiting the disturbances seen by the Generator, will be key to your and our success in the future.
The role includes the need to support ad-hoc and emerging power-related tasks on the other Projects the PSU CDT is involved in. An overarching understanding of power techniques and the ability to step into a live issue is required.
The role also requires the ability for general oversight of several Projects, acting as a technical and managerial buffer between the Engineering, Project, and PSU CDT Management Teams.
Great work-life balance.
Life shouldn't be all work and no play. That's why we offer brilliant benefits like half days on Fridays, flexible hours, gym memberships, and many other incentives to make life great. Not to forget, our award-winning pension scheme.
Note: Due to the nature of the tasks involved, you will have to achieve full SC security clearance and may need to satisfy further UK eyes only and ITAR conditions.
Key Responsibility Areas
You will report directly to a CDT Lead Engineer, covering the wide scope of PSU and System Topologies, Power System Analysis, Power System Design, and partitioning of requirements into LRI, SRI, and SSRI. A clear and methodical work ethic is necessary when 'fire fighting' tasks emerge.
You will be responsible for:
* Providing technical and managerial support to the Engineering, Project, and PSU CDT Management Teams.
* Supporting Power CDT for a full range of Power System tests including prototyping, design verification, and production support.
* Creation and review of documentation such as Outsource Procurement Specifications, Statement of Work, Circuit & System Simulations, associated White Papers, Test Reports, and Test plans.
* Working closely with other CDTs and the Design for EMC Team to create Earth & Grounding diagrams, EMC Plans, and Design Stage Review material.
* Knowledge sharing with the other members of the PSU CDT.
* Providing design and domain knowledge support to Projects, CDTs, Suppliers, Workshare Partners, and Customers.
* Reviewing System Requirements and partitioning into Power System Requirements, Sub-partitioning into SRI Requirements.
* Providing support to other members of the CDT, including schematic capture, component selection, derating, and simulation of power supply circuitry.
* Conducting PSU Topology Analysis.
* Reviewing current and emerging Energy Storage materials.
* Reviewing current and emerging Energy Conservation techniques.
* Reviewing how the Power System impacts the performance of the Generator.
You will also play an active role in the ongoing process improvement initiatives within the team and knowledge sharing of Power-related topics across the wider business.
Is there room to grow?
We encourage our Engineers to find and follow their passion. We offer fantastic opportunities for learning, development, and professional growth. Your career will be massively varied. Join us, and you will be constantly reinventing and developing your technical skillset from one project to the next. Learning on the job isn't just a benefit - it's a must.
Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required
In order to be considered for this role, you will have previous experience in the design, manufacture, test, and integration of PSUs and/or Power Systems. Ideally, you will possess a minimum of HND in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
You will ideally have knowledge in the following areas:
* ACDC and/or DCDC switched mode power supply design.
* Control and interface circuitry.
* Experience with Mentor Graphics.
* Experience with simulation software: Simetrix, LT Spice, Matlab.
* Fault diagnosis to component level.
* Electrical power systems.
* Electrical safety (RF safety is a 'nice to have').
* Measurement & Instrumentation systems.
* Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Visio.
* MS Project and Work Package Management.
