The role of Director of Studies-Academic (DOS) is an exciting dynamic role, ideally suited to someone with up-to-date knowledge of current pedagogy and a desire to create and implement highly impactful teaching and learning systems here at Kings Brighton.
This is a vital role, instrumental in creating and maintaining the highest academic standards throughout our academic courses. The role is responsible for guiding and monitoring staff, resources and student progress, with the aim to enable our students to achieve exceptional outcomes.
This role reports to the Principal and is a member of the Senior Leadership Team. They will be responsible for managing the Academic Senior Leadership Team, Academic Administrator and Exams Officer, also working closely with other key team members including the Foundation Course Director, Head of English, Head of Boarding/College Services Manager, SENCO/Designated Safeguarding Lead, Welfare and other support staff.

Duties and Responsibilities
* Establish and oversee academic systems, processes and policies so the school can operate effectively.
* Manage all academic courses taught at Kings Brighton, including GCSE, A Level and ALF.
* Ensure compliance with the relevant Independent School Standards, at all times.
* Oversee the day-to-day management of the academic department.
* Oversee the Academic Senior Leadership Team (BACT), comprising of Heads of Department, Foundation Course Director and academic administration.
* Facilitate learning which enables students to achieve high standards, supporting the responsibility of wellbeing, education and discipline of all our students.
* Working with the Academic SLT, develop, deliver and maintain an exciting curriculum for all learners, including those with SEND in line with policy and quality assurance processes.
* Develop, implement and manage an effective monitoring system for academic student progress to help maximise achievement and attainment.
* Identify and recommend innovative resources for the effective delivery of academic subjects.
* Ensure that academic teachers fulfil the requirements of their job descriptions and ensure effective co-operation, collaboration and communication between teachers.
* Analyse and report on all relevant data for review and reflection on student progress.
* Assess prospective student applications to the academic department, as necessary, within a timely manner.
* Receive agent/parent visits to the College.
* Advise designated students on university options as part of the UCAS counselling process as necessary.
* Ensure high quality teaching across all academic courses; using the appraisal system (and lesson observations) to manage this expectation and encouraging teacher professional development.
* Be available to teachers to offer advice, guidance, and support.
* Ensure that an exciting, successful CPD program is in place, appropriate for both the teaching community as a whole and for individuals.
* Create and manage the academic timetables with support of Principal, academic admin and senior staff, ensuring the best level of efficiency is offered.
* Working with the exams officer and academic administrator, ensure the smooth running of exams following JCQ requirements.
* Liaise regularly with the SENCO and Designated Safeguarding Lead, ensuring staff and pupils’ safety and welfare through effective approaches to safeguarding, as part of a duty of care.
* Support in the development and delivery of the academic enrichment programme.
* Prepare and lead the Academic department for British Council and Ofsted inspections, ensuring compliance and aiming towards Outstanding.
* Working with the Principal on recruitment of teaching staff.
* Lead on specific academic projects as requested by the Principal or Senior Central Leadership team.
* Oversee the discipline of academic students in line with the School Behavior Policy and ensure an effective attendance monitoring process is in place.
* Lead on academic staff discipline and competency issues.
* As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, contribute to the School Development Plan, establishing and sustaining the school’s ethos and strategic direction, working on whole school actions with the Principal and other Senior Leaders.
* Work with the marketing team to encourage uptake of places at Kings Brighton.

Review of Performance
* Performance Management Reviews will focus on the post holder’s responsibilities and professional development linked to the school improvement priorities.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate:
Professional experience:
* Be a fully qualified subject specialist with significant teaching experience
* Have experience of academic middle, or senior management
* Be experienced in the management and administration of academic programmes such as GCSE, A Level, university preparation foundation programmes
* Assessment skills including exam setting and marking
* Have strong IT skills, including data analysis
* Have excellent written and communication skills
* Have a clear understanding of the commercial demands of working for a private independent school whose students are predominantly recruited from overseas
* Understand current pedagogy
* Have experience in delivering CPD for teaching staff
* Know what' outstanding' looks like

* Essential – Bachelor’s degree and QTS (or equivalent experience)
