Who we are.
Founded in 1905, Friends of the Elderly (FotE) is one of the longest-running, registered national charities dedicated to supporting older people in living well in later life. We provide high-quality, person-centred care services, including nursing, residential, dementia and respite care, across our day centres and care homes.
FotE also runs a grants programme that has developed over time in response to older people’s changing needs. We are one of the few organisations still supporting older people who are facing financial crises in this way.
Friends of the Elderly continually evolves and strives to improve as a charity. In 2017, we reviewed and upgraded our approach to dementia care by partnering with the University of Worcester’s Association for Dementia Studies. This led to an enhancement of the quality of life for people living with dementia who use our services.
Before the pandemic, we refreshed our strategy to reflect the need for flexible care and accommodation. Our plans for the future are to continue to provide high-quality services that are personalised to individual needs and integrated with local communities and to develop age-friendly homes alongside residential care homes.
In 2023-2024, Friends of the Elderly’s residential and daycare services supported the physical and mental well-being of 500 older people.
What are we looking for in our new Chief Executive?
Friends of the Elderly’s new Chief Executive will work closely with the Board to provide vision, leadership and direction to the charity and ensure it meets its objectives. They will help set the strategy and lead its implementation, empowering and motivating the senior executive team and the wider staff team. They will be able to get the very best out of people through strong relationships with the board, staff, volunteers and external partners to benefit Friends of the Elderly’s work with older people.
The new Chief Executive will demonstrate their passion for exceptional care for older people and be able to evidence their commitment to and achievement of the highest standards of care, compliance and charity governance.
The new Chief Executive will be robust and positive, able to drive the necessary modernisation and change forward while maintaining the values and legacy of Friends of the Elderly’s exceptional care track record.
They will be a seasoned leader who has successfully steered an organisation of similar size and complexity, ideally in the care of vulnerable people. Someone who has successfully delivered sustained transformation and understands how to manage a change process across building infrastructure and people. With a commercial mindset, they will be responsible for the operational running of successful services while holding firm to the charity’s core vision, mission, values, and reason for existence. Clarity of understanding in relation to good governance within the charity environment will also be crucial, as will the ability to be an ambassador and powerful advocate for Friends of the Elderly’s vision of future care.
Above all, the new Chief Executive will hold the care and support of older people and their fulfilment at the forefront, ensuring high standards in all areas of operation—service delivery, growth and development, buildings, infrastructure modernisation. They will navigate multiple key stakeholder relationships internally and externally while generating new relationships with future partners and funders.
