The role
We are currently looking to appoint a Non LGV Driver. The main duties of the role will include mechanical sweeping, emptying litterbins, and collecting waste materials to maintain the cleanliness of the borough.
Qualifications
Category C1 Driving Licence or equivalent
Hold a valid Driver Qualification Card (DQC)
Duties and responsibilities
- Drive and operate any non LGV vehicle/machinery allocated within the Operations fleet up to 7.5 tonne including mechanical sweepers, to take responsibility for the vehicle and carry out daily vehicle checks, routine maintenance and reporting of defects, complying with all relevant legal requirements.
- Undertake general street cleansing activities including litter picking, sweeping, removal of debris, leaves, weeds, hazardous waste such as needles, animal faeces, animal carcasses, gritting, snow clearance, flood debris clearance and removal of fly tipping as well as the cleansing of toilets.
- Transport all waste to authorised waste sites, ensuring that approved weight limits and legal requirements are adhered to.
- Maintain the cleanliness of the vehicle allocated, power washing and removing any build-up of waste where necessary
- Take responsibility for the Health and Safety of yourself and others; including carrying out all duties with regard to council procedures and risk assessments, reporting all incidents as soon as possible and ensuring you are wearing the required PPE
- To have a professional attitude and act as an ambassador for the Council when carrying out your day-to-day duties. If required
• You will provide assistance and advice to members of the public including sign posting to council services.
• To discuss and resolve any customer issues on a face to face basis and escalate to a line manager if unable to do so.
- To assist with any other functions of the Operations Team as required including grounds maintenance, cemeteries work and town centre cleansing. Duties will be carried out for the jobs up to and including those in the same grade, provided such duties are within the competence of the employee.
Person Specification
- Experience of prioritising own workload and achieving deadlines
- Experience of driving vehicles and performing tasks within a street cleansing environment, such litter bin emptying and driving mechanical sweepers
- Experience of delivering services in a customer focused environment
- Good oral and written communication skills and be able to follow instructions
- Ability to interpret information from maps and plan routes to maximise efficiency of the service
- Ability to use mobile devices such as tablets
- Ability to deal with customers in a polite, professional and friendly manner
- Ability to work on own initiative and make decisions within pre-determined guidelines.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to build productive working relationships with management and colleagues
- Ability to undertake work of a physical nature in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions
- To take personal responsibility for your own Health & Safety, other colleagues and members of the public.
- The ability to work some overtime during Bank Holidays and peak periods
