Role Overview:
Reporting to the Director of Finance, you will be the Finance Director for a division with an annual income of £200 million. You will play a significant role in scoping and developing the overall strategy. You will also have a finance leadership role within the finance community, contributing to the strategic agenda and development of the finance service.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and execute a unified Financial Service strategy.
2. Build strong working relationships with colleagues in Financial Services and Management Accounting.
3. Share and develop best practices with other lead finance managers.
4. Represent the division on the Finance Executive team and engage local finance managers in service development.
5. Provide leadership in developing an effective and efficient service across the division.
6. Lead the vision and implementation of the finance strategy in line with institutional goals and priorities.
7. Take a lead role on some Finance Service projects and provide input to others.
Specific Duties:
1. Support the organisations' mission by balancing reputational and financial considerations.
2. Lead and implement significant elements of the strategy.
3. Manage all aspects of financial management, reporting, and research grant management.
4. Develop a comprehensive and sustainable financial strategy.
5. Ensure robust financial planning, budget monitoring, and control.
6. Provide financial information and advice for new initiatives, strategic reviews, major funding bids, and commercial partnerships.
7. Ensure effective research grant planning and management.
8. Engage with external bodies and participate in commercial negotiations.
9. Ensure high standards of financial performance management, reporting, budgeting, and forecasting.
10. Ensure compliance with financial procedures and year-end accounting.
Qualifications and Experience:
1. Professionally qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA).
2. Extensive experience in leadership and management in a senior finance role.
3. Proven ability to lead and manage a significant and diverse team.
4. Experience in delivering strategic and operational objectives through large and complex change projects.
5. Ability to work effectively under pressure with multiple stakeholders and tight deadlines.
6. Highly developed interpersonal, influencing, and negotiating skills.
7. Appreciation of financial challenges in the current economic climate.
8. Ability to manage and maintain service quality and coordinate services at the departmental level.
9. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and experience with mainframe accounting systems.
Desirable:
1. Experience in a finance role within the Higher Education Sector.
2. Understanding of relevant legislative and statutory frameworks, including company and charity law.
