Continuing responsibility for the delivery of care needs and maintenance of Clinical Standards on the ward/dept.
Provide effective leadership and support to all grades of staff, planning and directing activities to provide the optimal standard of care.
Ensure that the ward/dept is clean and provides a safe environment for patients and staff.
To deputise for the Ward/Dept Manager when required.
Participate in Directorate/site management responsibilities.
Main duties of the job
1. Professional Leadership/Management
2. Co-ordinate the provision of high quality patient care, ensuring that the service continually meets the needs of patients.
3. Ensure all staff are aware of their role and responsibilities.
4. Operate the scheme of delegation, as directed by the Ward/Dept Manager, so that staff are aware of their responsibilities and accountabilities for patient care.
5. Ensure that all staff (including students, temporary, part time nursing staff and junior members of the multidisciplinary clinical teams) are trained and educated in the appropriate skills to deliver competent and timely patient care.
6. Provide support to all staff (including students, temporary, part time nursing staff and junior members of the multidisciplinary clinical teams) to ensure they are supported and supervised in a way that promotes patient well-being and staff development.
7. Assist Ward/Dept Manager with recruitment and selection of staff.
8. Responsible for stock levels on ward/dept with manager.
9. Responsible for staff cover e.g: Duty Rota.
10. Bleep Holders site/service.
11. Development of protocols within Clinical Areas.
12. Responsibility to safeguard Patients Property.
13. Supervise the effective utilisation of the nursing resource to provide a safe level of patient care taking into account individual staff preferences and financial constraints.
14. Act as an effective role model for all ward staff.
15. Ensure patient/carer views are sought and incorporated into the development and improvement of practice.
About us
We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Person Specification
1st Level Registered Nurse
* 1st level registered nurse. Recent post basic clinical qualification in relevant clinical area. Mentoring / assessing qualification or Teaching qualification eg City & Guilds, Professional Trainers Certificate.
* Recent relevant experience at senior level within the speciality. Evidence of clinical competence in speciality. Able to assume a lead clinical role as appropriate. Understanding of the setting and monitoring of standards. Evidence of teaching and developing staff. Able to work as a member of the multidisciplinary clinical team.
* Demonstrable appropriate/specific clinical skills to designated area.
* Recent leadership development or willingness to work towards a leadership qualification.
* Experience working in the emergency department.
* Advanced life support.
