Job Description
We are looking for a crew member to help with the operation of our vessels in the Medway and Thames. The vessels provide excursion-based tours from Queenborough, Chatham, Southend and Rochester and undertake excursions on our Estuary and river tours.
The position comprises of contracted minimum 35 hours averaged over the monthly pay period. The contract includes paid breaks, holidays, and access to opt into the HM Government pension plan. As a seasonal operation, the roles tasks will fluctuate with more vessel-based operations likely in festive or seasonal periods.
All applicants will require all STCW training for Fire Fighting, First Aid and Sea Survival. The role will be reportable to the Managing Director, and a full induction and training on each vessel within the fleet will be provided prior to fulfilling the roles with the existing Jetstream Tours crews. Applicants are to make themselves available for induction days at the beginning of the employment.
Staff are involved in the promotion, product development, and sales of tickets. The role's responsibility includes active document management, maintenance and cleaning of assets and equipment as part of the role. As close engagement with customers is required daily, clear communication, good cash handling, problem-solving and crowd management skills are required. Successful applicants should always conduct themselves appropriately as a representative of Jetstream Tours.
Full duties include but are not limited to:
* Assist in maintaining the company’s and the company vessel’s documents as prescribed in accordance with the company safety management.
* Assist inspections of the vessel by MCA/MECAL or other authorised person.
* To ensure passenger welfare by monitoring and maintaining:
* passenger access and egress, gangway operations.
* Passenger cabin spaces.
* Cleanliness
* Vessel Security
* Revenue protection
* Assist in briefing and /or training new crew and assisting in safety matters.
* Assisting the Master in his/her duties or working with crew as master in the completion of their own duties (based on qualifications).
* Ensure any health and safety priorities and that best practice is followed in the execution of their duties.
* Ensure they and their crew are familiar with and are trained in emergency procedures and the results are recorded.
* Assist in sales and promotion of the companies’ services at events and to the public.
* Operate bar in compliance with licence and/or security on board.
* All revenue is accounted for and deposited as per daily instructions.
* If, a key holder, to ensure vessels and piers are locked accordingly and keys kept safe from any misuse.
* Assisting in planning future tours and work, scheduling and maintenance
The Bosun shall exercise their duty in accordance with this SMS and shall be responsible to the Managing Director, for the efficient and effective maintenance of company vessels.
The Bosun, in particular discharging these responsibilities, shall:
* In partnership with the Master, Monitor and maintain up to date vessel maintenance records using the company approved maintenance system.
* Liaise with master’s on routine maintenance and safety matters.
* Promote company SMS standards.
* Ensure all mechanical assets are maintained and serviced in accordance to OEM recommendations.
* Plan and execute, dry docking for all vessels in accordance with Vessel’s safety management certificates.
* Maintain a stock of oil, chemicals, PPE and spares for critical systems.
* Maintain Oil records including disposal of hazardous waste.
* Maintain the company’s garbage records including disposal of hazardous waste.
* Carry out routine inspections, servicing and defect repairs as required by the SMS.
* Close out reports of defects, servicing and maintenance in a timely manner.
* Delegate such tasks to company staff, apprentices or contractors for the rectification of defects as appropriate.
* Identify and maintain service records for Critical equipment.
* Carry out vessel Machinery and safety equipment familiarisation induction training as required to Masters, mates and crew for all vessels.
* Maintain and update Training procedures for relevant equipment for all vessels,
* Liaise with suppliers and source parts to carry out timely repairs and notify accounts department.
* Maintain and report use of a company expenses card for ad-hoc purchases outside of company supplier accounts.
* Supply pro-forma and/or purchase invoice for all parts purchased to accounts and to ensure each corresponds to a Purchase order.
* Flag any safety matters or concerns to immediately the DP, MD and Master(s).
* Attend and contribute to Safety Management meetings and SMS reviews (as described in section 3.4.3) as required.
* Attend and facilitate inspections of company vessels by MCA/MECAL or other authorised person.
* Inform the DP of Incidents and emergencies.
* Routine or emergency maintenance and repair requests for ALL vessels.
* Any matter affecting the Company’s operational interests.
* Provide a monthly engineering report to the DP for the director’s review.
The roles are to carry out other duties as required by the Managing Director.
Experience:
You must be legible to work in the UK.
A minimum of 1-2 years of marine experience is required.
Applicants must hold:
* A valid Medical ML5 or ENG1
* A valid First Aid, firefighting and Sea Survival certificates
* Minimum RYA Powerboat level 2
* An engineering qualification
Location:
You will primarily be based at Queenborough, Kent and Rochester Kent however from time to time you may be asked to join the vessel from other ports including Gravesend and or Chatham depending on Tour departure, overnight berthing or dry-docking scenarios. Office work will be at the company’s base, currently in Stockbury. Public events attended may be at any relevant site and transport will be arranged accordingly.
Working days:
You will be required to work Monday to Sunday and will be subject to working hours and rest periods as described in MSN 1854. This will be 3-5 days of any 7.
During summer months (April-October) rosta patterns will be primarily Thursday to Sunday with two shut down periods scheduled however will be subject to annual review.
During winter months and when on Maintenance, (November-March) this will be primarily Monday-Friday wherever possible, however charters may extend into weekends particularly around Christmas and private hires. During such times rosta may be adapted to give alternative days off.
Rostas will be available at the start of each season and will run for at least month in advance. Changes by mutual agreement.
During Shutdown periods, Holiday/leave is encouraged.
Holidays
Paid Holidays based on 224 hours.
Holidays must be taken at convenient times to the company and should not be taken during half term breaks and must not be taking during the school summer holidays.
If working 4 days a week 10 hours will be deducted for holiday, if working 5 days per week 8 hours will be deducted.
Hourly Rate:
The position is salaried and based on 35 hours per week with paid overtime available. Expected minimum 5 hours during summer months. Additional hours always subject to Working Time Directive (MSN 1778), paid at an hourly rate, or fixed one-off payment.
If called in for a private hire commencing after 1900 a minimum payment of 10 hours will be made.
Starting rate of £15.00 per hour and increases based on skills, certification and experience.
