Our team provides specialist Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy services across our 3 hospital sites (Dewsbury District Hospital, Pinderfields General Hospital and Pontefract General Infirmary).
Our acute inpatient work is provided on the Pinderfields site with outpatient services and endoscopy provided across all 3 sites. Our consultants rotate to provide inpatient care on the specialist inpatient gastroenterology ward. We have a Gastroenterologist of the Week model providing expert advice to the rest of the hospital and helping to deliver urgent endoscopy services.
Our gastroenterology team provide a 24/7 GI Bleed on call service. We provide specialist clinics for several conditions including Hepatology, IBD, Cancer and Specialist Nutrition. We currently provide a range of endoscopy services including ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography).

Main duties of the job
The main duties of the post include the following:
1. Specialist IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) clinic (2 face to face clinics per week)
2. Endoscopy, with a focus on IBD diagnosis and bowel cancer surveillance (2 endoscopy sessions per week)
3. IBD related e-consultations with primary care and helping with the early diagnosis pathway.
4. Key member of the IBD MDT (multidisciplinary team)
5. General Gastroenterology clinic
6. Contribution to the GI bleed out of hours on-call rota on a 1:8 basis
7. Provision of inpatient care to the dedicated specialty bed base on a 1:8 rota
8. Leadership roles within sub-specialty areas
9. Supervision of junior doctors and nursing staff
10. Urgent and Emergency Care duties include out-of-hours on-call schedules will take due account of the provisions of working time regulations and safe working.
11. Support from the professional and experienced secretarial team.
12. Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with the Trust Framework, with at least a minimum of 1.5 SPAs included in the core 10 PA timetable.
13. Additional SPA or DCC time may be commissioned in line with the successful candidate's skills and changing service requirements.

Within the job plan for this position are up to 1.5 PA of DCC to join the team providing care for general medical inpatients. This is applicable for those who have dual accreditation for Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine (GIM). The new department of GIM, within the Specialty and Integrated Medicine Clinical Service Unit, will be staffed by 15 dual-accredited physicians from Group 1 specialties. These consultants will work a consultant of the week model of care on a one-in-eight rota, providing a daily consultant ward round (4-hour duration). This new service will provide opportunities to collaborate with allied specialties, be involved in service development and quality improvement, as well as gain leadership and management experience.
The GIM PAs will be reviewed after two years in post, with an expectation (subject to individual wishes and confirmation with your line manager) that this activity is removed and replaced with specialty work if desired. We make a commitment that no longer than 3 years will be needed to be provided in GIM, but we are hopeful that some colleagues will continue this activity in the long term.
