Macmillan Assistant Practitioner - Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy

We are looking for an experienced Therapy Assistant to join our Macmillan Integrated Therapy Service providing advice, treatment, and support to patients and families of those who have been diagnosed with cancer with complex needs.
The team has representatives of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Dietitians, and Speech and Language Therapists. The post holder will join another part-time Assistant Practitioner in the same role.
The post holder may be required to work across the two main hospital sites of The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford, and visit patients in their own homes to issue or check equipment or to review their status following discharge home from the hospital.
Along with GCSEs in Maths and English at Grades 9 - 4 (or equivalent), the successful post holder must have previous therapy experience to bring to this role.
Main duties of the job
As part of the Occupational and Physiotherapy clinicians, the post holder will be doing some ward-based clinical work aiding patients to rehabilitate and become as independent as possible while supporting them and families during often difficult times under the guidance of qualified therapists. There will be some telephone-based interventions as well as supporting patients at home or in an outpatient area. There is also the requirement to provide training and education to both patients and other colleagues.
About us
The Macmillan Integrated Therapy Service is part of the main Therapy team working across both The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford.
The team is made up of four Therapy Professions and has four AP roles who manage their own caseload and run clinics with the support of the qualified therapists.
The team is employed by The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust but is adopted by Macmillan to provide services to patients with complex needs caused by their cancer or treatments. The team sits within the Care Closer to Home care group within the therapy team with a focus on supporting patients and families in the community as well as in the hospital.
There is regular supervision and development opportunities, particularly using the resources available to us as Macmillan professionals.
There is a Team Coordinator and a Therapy Operational Manager who drives developments in line with Macmillan and changes in patients' needs.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* GCSEs in English or Maths to GCSE Grade C or equivalent
* Foundation degree or equivalent or willingness to work towards one
Experience
* Substantial previous therapy experience working within a health care environment
* Practical and theoretical experience of teaching and presentation
* Experience in working with Cancer patients
* Experience in liaising with other agencies
* Substantial previous experience of working within an acute or community health care environment
Skills
* Ability to work independently to an agreed protocol, evaluating patient's condition and modifying programmes as appropriate within levels of competence
* Ability to self-manage workload and prioritise caseload
* Demonstrate effective and compassionate communication skills
* Ability to exchange condition-related information with patients and relatives and respond appropriately when there are communication difficulties
* Ability to learn through own experience, feedback from others, and be aware of own limitations
* Ability to organise and deliver a health education session either in 1:1 or group sessions
* Ability to assist in research, audit, and development in relation to the area of work
* Ability to use PowerPoint, Excel, Word, or equivalent
