The Perioperative Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the surgical team throughout the three phases of patient care: pre-procedure, intra-procedure and post-procedure. This includes ensuring the safe transfer of patients to and from the theatre, assisting in the preparation of the operating environment and maintaining infection control standards. The role involves supporting the multidisciplinary team by ensuring equipment readiness, stock management and adherence to safety protocols.
During surgery, the Perioperative Assistant participates in patient positioning, assisting with monitoring equipment and providing general support to the team. They are also responsible for handling specimens, preparing instruments and maintaining documentation in compliance with local and national guidelines. In the post-procedure phase, the role includes assisting with patient recovery, ensuring nutritional and hygiene needs are met and maintaining a clean and well-stocked environment for ongoing procedures. Throughout all duties, maintaining patient dignity, safety and confidentiality is paramount.
