Role
Are you passionate about the creative and economic development of Unst? Wild Skies Shetland, a unique and award-winning small charity, is looking to recruit a Project Development Officer to help us take further steps towards long-term financial sustainability.
This is a fully funded, fixed-term, part-time (0.6 FTE) contract for 36 months. It can be freelance (£20 per hour) or salaried (£30,500 FTE) for the right candidate. This position could be a job share.
To be successful you will have a flexible approach as the job will develop with you. You are likely to be energetic, imaginative and personable with excellent communication skills. IT skills and budget management experience are essential. It is a very varied role, and therefore applicants with a wide range of previous experience will be considered.
The job will vary day to day. For example, you could be discussing a new sky-themed event with a venue manager and organising catering for it; you may be researching and completing funding applications or guiding visitors around the Sky Trail. There will be other computer-based work too, e.g. developing the ‘Friends of Wild Skies’ database or looking at, interpreting, and reporting on Sky Trail QR code usage stats.
You will occasionally be required to work evenings and/or weekends depending on the activities being offered.
You will be expected to spend a considerable proportion of your time based in Unst, as much of the work will need to be face-to-face. Hybrid working is a possibility if the right arrangements can be mutually agreed.
Wild Skies Shetland, as the Creative Regeneration winner at the SURF Awards in December 2023, is committed to the creative and imaginative economic development of Unst. This is an exciting time to be involved as you can help shape the future.
Wild Skies is committed to being an equal opportunities employer.
You are invited to phone either Jane Macaulay, WSS Secretary (07884 286548 or 01957 711647), and/or Catriona Waddington, WSS Chair (07875 674912) for an informal chat.

1. You will provide advice to prospective applicants, assess applications and will be in regular contact with grant-holders as they progress with their projects. Your recommendations will guide decisions on awarding grants and how we support grant-holders.

You will ensure that our funding responds to the local context and our commitment to equity and inclusion. You will be expected to challenge yourself and colleagues to continually improve the way we work.
3. You will be responsible for understanding how an organisation’s ideas align with our funding priorities and making good judgements about when to take an application further or when to signpost to alternative opportunities. You will be able to communicate clearly and concisely your recommendations about who and what we fund.
During your first few weeks with the Fund, in-person training will be delivered in Glasgow, you can expect to be office-based on most working days. After the initial training period work patterns are more flexible. In a typical week most full-time Funding Officers would be likely to spend one day in our Glasgow office, one or two days out for meetings and project visits in their assigned area, and will work from home on other days. There can be occasional weekend and evening working, but most of our work takes place on weekdays in normal working hours.
About You
We are looking for talented people from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and experiences who share our values and are passionate about making a difference through our funding. Whether through lived or gained experience you will really understand the communities we work with.
