Apply by 5pm on 17 February for this writer residency on the theme ‘Attached to Land’ at Fruitmarket in Edinburgh.
How does the Residency work?
The residency will start on an agreed date in March 2025 and will run for one calendar year, with some flexibility where needed. Aspects of the fellowship can be undertaken remotely, supported by hybrid technology, as required. Fruitmarket would look to include a number of engagement points during the year that allowed the public to follow the course of the chosen writer through their fellowship.
Who can apply?
The Fellowship has been designed to support Scottish based mid-career writers. This opportunity defines mid-career as an established writer who has reputably published one of the following:
* One novel or book-length work of creative non-fiction
* One collection of short stories
* One poetry collection
This creative work may be in English, Scots or Gaelic. Fruitmarket do not consider work which has been self-published.
The Fellowship is designed to support a writer to set aside time to write, rather than deliver creative workshops or other project-based activities. There is also a small additional budget available for research-based activities.
Fruitmarket aims to reach people who have been underrepresented in audiences, in their team and in the sector and have prioritised increasing representation of disabled people, people who are black or from POC communities. Fruitmarket welcomes all people no matter their age, race, gender, sex, sexual orientation, religion or belief, class, cultural background, disability, marital status, pregnancy or maternity status.
Broad Theme
The chosen writer will engage with Fruitmarket for a year, exploring themes of shared responsibility for, and within, the climate crisis. The environmental focus of their theme, ‘Attached to Land: Mutual accountability within environmental permacrisis’, takes inspiration from Fruitmarket’s wider 2025–2026 programme that includes exhibitions from Jaune Quick-to-See-Smith and Ilana Halperin.
The successful applicant will receive a stipend of £24,000 to support them through their 12-month residency. This will be remunerated as a quarterly payment, in arrears, unless otherwise agreed.
