What's involved with this role: Interim PT Conservation Officer – Planning Services Job Ref: Bournemouth 5258259 Pay Rate: £20.85 per hour PAYE Hours per week: 20 specific days and hour TBC Role Length: This opening assignment is for 3 months City: Bournemouth, Dorset Candidates must be able to travel, using public or other forms of transport where they are viable, or by holding a valid UK driving licence with access to own or pool car. The purpose of the role is to assist the Council’s Urban Design & Conservation Team with delivery of all matters relating to the historic built environment and townscape within the Planning Service, in accordance with Government guidance, legislation, and best practice. Key Responsibilities: Identify, research and analyse the issues and needs that impact on places and buildings within BCP and ensure creative and innovative solutions on how to address these. Providing timely and solution focussed urban design and or conservation advice into major and other significant planning and listed building applications and works to the public realm. Research urban design and or conservation issues, provide evidence, help develop policy and supplementary guidance and represent the Council at Local Plan examinations, appeals and enforcement matters. Be a point of contact for liaison and advice on urban design and or conservation matters both within and outside the Council. Evaluate and review Conservation Areas in line with the Council’s statutory responsibilities. This entails site surveys, preparation of character appraisals, design guidance and reports. Participating in community engagement and consultation involving attendance at public and stakeholder meetings which may involve some evening and weekend working. Establish and maintain credible and effective working relationships, both internally and with external organisations. Undertake any other duties from time to time commensurate with the grade and responsibilities of the post. Qualifications: Town Planning, Urban Design or Conservation degree, diploma or post graduate degree or equivalent relevant qualification. Membership of (or demonstrating experience that makes eligible to be) a recognised professional body such as the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and or Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC). Skills & Experience: Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role, or context and ideally within a public sector organisation. Proven record in urban design and or conservation work, including survey, analysis, policy formulation, report writing, engagement/consultation. Advanced knowledge and experience of working in urban design or with historic buildings. Experience of conservation relating to Historic Buildings through Planning system. Proven ability to coach others and support their professional development. Proven ability to provide complex and specialist advice and manage own high risk/high profile workload. Proven experience of influencing and shaping the strategic direction of urban design or conservation. Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
