Description We are looking for a talented Metallurgist to join our team specialising in Metallurgical Laboratory for our Quality Department in Daventry, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom. In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways: Technical Expertise: Provide specialised support within your discipline, influencing technical direction and continuously developing your expertise. Collaboration: Work closely with Production, Quality, Supply Chain, Engineering and Service teams to deliver material and processing solutions that meet customer needs, relating to metallurgy. Decision Making: Make critical decisions regarding materials and chemical selection, development, and inspection to improve product quality and reliability, relating to engine components and Plant Processes. Procedures Development: Write and refine metallurgical and chemical-related specifications and standards to ensure they meet evolving quality and capability requirements. Process Improvement: Apply and enhance processes like materials and chemical validation, quality auditing, and design validation to ensure high-quality decision-making. Project Leadership: Independently lead smaller projects or manage complex components, ensuring successful project outcomes. Problem Solving: Lead investigations into chemical performance and processing issues, identify root causes, and recommend effective solutions. Knowledge Transfer: Mentor and guide less experienced engineers and technicians, fostering a collaborative and knowledgeable team environment. Responsibilities To be successful in this role you will need the following: Excel in Component Failure Analysis: Utilise laboratory equipment to analyse specimens' physical and chemical properties. Understand design intent, manufacturing processes, and operational history to identify root causes of failures and recommend corrective actions. Characterise Materials Accurately: Interpret mechanical, chemical, microstructural, and physical properties using lab equipment. Ensure compliance with specifications and correlate these properties with test results to confirm robustness and reliability. Select Appropriate Materials and Processes: Evaluate component requirements to choose the best materials and manufacturing processes. Validate your selections through rigorous testing to ensure they meet the necessary specifications. Master Statistical Methods: Knowledge of descriptive statistics, probability distributions, graphical analysis, and statistical inference. Use these skills to analyse technical data and make data-driven decisions through techniques like regression and design of experiments. Qualifications Education/Experience: College, university, or equivalent bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy or Materials Science & Engineering is required. Significant experience as a Senior or Lead Metallurgist. Preferred experience in laboratory management and continuous improvement techniques to enable the capability and development of the laboratory staff and facility. A proven history of solving technical problems and making quality decisions. Experience using SEM is preferred. Knowledge of cast irons, steel, and aluminium alloys is advantageous. Familiarity with MS Office tools is desirable.
