Overview
Element Materials Technologies seeks to recruit an experienced Mechanical Engineer interested in material testing and characterization, with a particular focus on hydrogen environments. As a member of the operations team in our Hitchin laboratory, the Mechanical Engineer position, in close co-operation with the technical lead, performs and develops a variety of routine and non-routine testing, analysis, and technical investigation assignments. The engineer must be proficient in a number of core technical and business skills including, but not limited to, fundamentals of mechanical engineering and compliance to established safety rules, code of conduct, and company policies and procedures. This is a hands-on role which involves laboratory testing of both large components and small coupon type samples, contact with customers and other laboratories within Element, as well as managing projects including writing technical reports.
Responsibilities
* Provides technical and engineering leadership and supports the development of new testing technologies within the laboratory.
* Participate in design, manufacturing, and installation of lab equipment and instrumentation.
* Participate in installation and commissioning of new projects.
* Participate in inspection and maintenance of installed equipment and instrumentation.
* Participates in repairs and modifications of installed equipment and instrumentation.
* Assists in the professional development of technicians and engineers within the laboratory.
* Setting up/running test machines to perform mechanical tests on engineering materials to a range of standards (e.g., ASTM, ISO).
* Setup of gaseous/liquid environments at pressure and temperature for in-situ testing.
* Processing and analysis of raw test data, writing of technical reports.
* Ensuring safe working practices are always adhered to by team members.
* Planning and scheduling of testing activities.
* Preparing project documentation, working to project schedule, observing quality standards and H&S procedures, engineering reviews.
* Support the development and documentation of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Skills / Qualifications
* Hold an MSc or higher in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering, with a minimum of two years of work experience.
* BSc applicants are acceptable with a minimum of five years of proven experience.
* Possess knowledge of test machines, drives, and control technology.
* Proficient in 3D CAD systems, including SolidWorks.
* Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbally.
* Possess strong analytical and computer skills.
* Possess a demonstrated ability to apply academic knowledge within the context of Element’s business. In-depth understanding of testing machines is a plus.
* Flexible and able to multitask on several different aspects of a project or on multiple projects.
