The post holder carries continuing responsibility for the 24 hour clinicalnurse management within the Surgical Assessment Unit and for the associate utilization ofstaff, assessment, planning and delivery of care needs and ensuring that the clinicalarea is a suitable learning environment for nursingstudents.
The post holder is responsible for setting, maintaining and monitoring the standardof care and serviceprovided.
· Develop nursing professional practice skills and competences in the areaof responsibility.
· Provide professional supervision of nursing and support staff in the areaof responsibility.
· Responsible for working towards the maintenance of morale of staff indifficult and stressful situations by providing regular feedback and anenvironment which encourages opencommunication.
· Ensure the maintenance of an environment in which patients nursingneeds can be assessed, plans developed, implemented and evaluated in anholistic manner, involving all members’ of the multidisciplinary team, patientsand their carers asappropriate.
· Ensure the maintenance of accurate nursing records and staff signature login line with NMC guidance “Record Keeping”2000.
· Apply health-promoting principles for patients andstaff.
· Maintain local professional policies ensuring the reflection of bestpractice
· Co-ordinate the reception and discharge of patients in conjunctionwith medical and bed managementstaff.
· Provide input to working and research groups, asappropriate.
· Ensure that there is effective liaison with the community Trust andSocial Services for patientaftercare.
· Maintain professional links with other wards and departments, withintheSurgical Directorate and other departments and specialties within theTrust.

· Dealing with occasional unpleasant conditions such as bodily fluidsand violence andaggression.
· To risk assess all patients and carry out manual handling as per TrustPolicy.
MANAGERIAL
· Responsible for holding and managing the devolved Ward Budgetensuring efficient deployment of resources in conjunction with ModernMatron.
· Manage and ensuring fairness of opportunity in the nursing service intheir area of responsibility, by monitoring, overtime, sickness, annual andstudy leave in line with Directoratepolicy.
· Create an appropriate educational climate for staffdevelopment.
· Takes the lead role for the unit in relation to ensuring Infection Controlpolicies and procedures are adheredto.
· Ensures effective communication systems are in place in order to consultwith and updatestaff.
· Act up for Modern Matron on a rotationbasis.
QUALITY
· Determine monitor and review the standards of the nursingservice.
· Formulate, review and update local policies in clinicalarea.
· Ensure that all staff are aware and adhere to local and Trust widepolicies, procedures and statutory bodydocumentation.
· Encourage the application of evidence based “bestpractice”.
· In line with the National Service Framework, NHS Modernisation Agendaand Trust Plan agenda develop and support clinical staff in undertakingthe development of critical care nursingpractice.
· Ensure Clinical Nurse Manager (Modern Matron) is advised ofsignificant events/changes.
· Investigate and respond to relevant complaints and clinical risks in linewith Trust procedures and the Clinical Governance agenda. Ensureappropriate responses are made and actionstaken.
