If so, we are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Ward Manager to join our elective / Non-elective Vascular ward at Sunderland Royal Hospital.
You will be working in a busy adult ward, which provides both elective and non-elective care to our Vascular patients. The Vascular ward at SRH supports patients from across the region from South Tyneside to Durham.
The successful candidate will be an experienced nurse with a background specialised in Vascular or another surgical speciality, with proven leadership skills and the vision and passion to help develop the service and optimise high-quality patient care. You will be responsible for ensuring the highest standards of care are delivered, ensuring the efficient running of the ward, effectively leading, motivating, supervising and directing staff to ensure that time and resources are managed through effective teamwork.
This is a demanding but very rewarding role with a Trust that is committed to the ongoing development of its staff.
Main duties of the job
The Ward Manager will be required to co-ordinate all functions and activities within this specialist clinical environment. The role includes working closely with the Vascular Consultants, colleagues in our other wards and departments, ED, Theatres, and other services throughout the Trust. The Ward Manager, working alongside the Matron and a full complement of Registered Nurses, Health Care Assistants and ward administration support, will provide strong leadership and foster excellent communication, teamwork and collaboration with all colleagues, to consistently deliver excellent patient care to all service users.
The duties of the Ward Manager include:
1. Providing high quality, effective, individualised care to all patients by assessing care needs and developing, implementing and evaluating them without supervision.
2. Managing the full nursing team; to include annual appraisal, staffing rotas, performance and sickness management, recruitment and selection and the supervision of students.
3. Monitoring standards of nursing care and taking appropriate action to maintain and improve them.
4. Leading on quality improvements within the patient pathway.
Job responsibilities
The Ward/Department Manager has 24 hour accountability for patient safety and patient experience on their ward/department, including line management of their staff.
* They must deliver high quality nursing care by ensuring appropriate systems and processes are in place to provide the continuity of safe and effective care at all times.
* They will act as a champion for professional accountability and standards, ensuring that professional practices are in line with the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), and Trust Policy.
* Ensure environmental standards and cleanliness of the ward/department are maintained in line with Trust and National standards.
* Effectively manage the ward/department nursing resource, ensuring that staff rotas are able to deliver safe and effective patient care.
* Support and contribute to the development of patient care and nursing practice within the Directorate. Supervising junior staff. Contribute to Trust wide projects as required.
* Ensure effective line management of staff and ensure they are supported in performing to their full potential. Ensure junior staff have appropriate support and supervision and are appropriately assessed.

Person Specification
Experience
* Extensive post-registration experience, some of which will be at a senior level within the required specialist area of practice.
* Experience of change management.
* Thorough understanding of contemporary nursing issues.
* Experience of leading a team.
* Evidence of innovation in practice.
* Participation in recruitment and selection process.
* Experience of working at Band 6 and/or Band 7.
* Experience of service redesign.
Qualifications
* Degree in nursing studies or healthcare related subject (UK equivalent).
* Masters level study, or equivalent specialist study/experience.
* Mentorship certificate/ Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience.
* Management and leadership training.
Physical skills
* Ability to assist patients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy.
Skills and Knowledge
* Evidence of leadership qualities.
* Awareness of national health and social care policy.
* Knowledge of best practice in area of specialism.
* Thorough understanding of expanded roles/professional practice issues.
* Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills are required.
* Able to work without supervision.
* Competent in the use of Microsoft office packages.
* Evidence of competency in relation to nursing practices appropriate to the post.
* Understanding of budget and financial control systems.
