The Atkinson in Southport is a leading arts centre housing a museum, galleries, library, cafe, shop, theatre and studio. We are seeking to recruit a Principal Manager to lead the curatorial programme for our Museum and Galleries. This is a crucial role, with responsibility for safeguarding Sefton Council’s heritage assets, particularly the collections of fine and decorative art, Egyptology, natural and social history.
The post-holder will determine the strategic planning of The Atkinson’s arts, heritage and cultural learning programmes, developing professional relationships and upholding the reputation of the venue as a regional centre of excellence. They will act as the designated museum professional for The Atkinson, ensuring the accredited status for the service is maintained.
They will develop and deliver The Atkinson’s vision and targets for audience development, community engagement and lifelong learning through arts and heritage. They will proactively seek appropriate funding opportunities to benefit the Atkinson and be the lead officer in delivering these initiatives.
As a member of The Atkinson’s Senior Management Team, they will contribute to the Council’s operating standards and reporting requirements. A comprehensive understanding of compliance and risk management in a museum and gallery setting is essential to the role.
Candidates will have experience of working at a senior level within a multi-venue arts environment, including staff management, and have a thorough grounding in developing visual arts, heritage and cultural learning programmes.
The Atkinson is a major attraction in Southport’s Visitor Economy. You will be ambitious in bringing the best in contemporary and historical visual arts, culture and heritage to The Atkinson in a high-profile programme of exhibitions, events and displays.
You will be passionate about increasing access and engagement with The Atkinson’s fine art and museum collections by taking a highly imaginative and inclusive approach to programming, interpretation and learning.
The post-holder will be committed to increasing engagement with culture and heritage so that The Atkinson maintains its status as a dynamic and evolving regional venue for arts, heritage, literature and information.
