What you'll be doing? Supporting the business and our divisional offices, our Head Office functions cover all departments from our Executive Board through to our support functions such as Group Design and Technical, HR, Health and Safety, IT, Sales and Marketing, Commercial, Procurement, Group Finance, Corporate Affairs, as well as Legal and Company Secretariat. We also have a specialised function – Barratt Partnerships. While the work varies from team to team, our key requirements don’t: you must be well organised, extremely helpful and resourceful, and able to use your initiative. You’ll understand that what you do is important, and impacts on your team, the department, and the wider business.
The Group Legal and Compliance (GLCT) function of Barratt Developments plc, based in Coalville, Leicestershire, is run by a progressive and innovative Head of Legal who is committed to developing a dynamic legal support function. The team is primed to meet the existing, and future, needs of the business.
The role is to support the Regulatory, Constriction and Disputes Team. You would also play a fundamental part in shaping the future success of the Group Legal function as it moves into a new world of proactive and innovative legal advice and support for the business
You will be expected to:
1. Manage a broad spectrum of legal work, including reviewing, drafting, negotiating and advising on a variety of legal agreements, which will be mainly property and construction contracts
2. Specifically, this will mean reviewing, drafting and negotiating terms of appointment for architects and other consultant types. As well as negotiations involving contractorsappointed under our large package agreements and/or other design & build contracts
3. Provide steering and advice to the business (including the Executive/Board) on various legal issues affecting the house building sector, including some compliance and regulatory matters;
4. Be capable of providing advice on some construction litigation matters, for example Terminations, Pay Less Notices and Adjudications. It will also include identifying and managing external lawyer’s input, where deemed appropriate;
5. Take responsibility for the supervision and training of more junior lawyers within the team;
6. Be a lead participant in the shaping and delivery of the future strategy of the Group Legal Team, including the implementation of a tailored training programme for the wider business; and
7. Actively participate in and collaborate with the Senior lawyers and/or the Group Head of Legal as and where required in respect of complex and strategic projects
What you'll need? To be successful in the role, we are looking for:
8. At least 8 years PQE
9. Amotivated, energised and confident character, with a “can do” approach to their work and advice
10. Be commercially minded
11. Be able to effectively balance risk with the overall aims and objectives of the Group
12. Private practice training essential
13. In-house experience helpful but not an absolute prerequisite for the role
14. Ability to work effectively both as part of a team and autonomously
15. Ability to deliver effectively under pressure to tight deadlines
16. Excellent organisational and multi-tasking and drafting skills
17. Good word processing and IT skills
18. Be prepared to design and deliver internal training in construction contracts and their uses
