Role Overview We are seeking an ambitious and strategic Deputy Director to join our London-based team. This key role will initially focus on advancing the Institute’s education and training initiatives while supporting the crucial functions related to membership engagement and marketing, in a phased manner. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director and key stakeholders within and outside the organisation to strengthen the ICS’s position as a global education leader in commercial shipping. Actively contribute to the overall management and direction of the Institute. Key Responsibilities: Management To lead, inspire and motivate staff and the tutors, examiners, assessors and volunteers supporting the Institute To play an active role in the senior management team and assist the director develop the budget, strategies and business plans for the Institute to deliver its objects, vision and mission Champion excellent customer service and best practice internally and throughout the Institute network To represent the Institute at external events Education & Training (Primary role) Drive the development and delivery of the ICS’s globally recognized education programmes and training initiatives. Collaborate with maritime experts to enhance course content, ensuring relevance to industry trends and demands. Oversee the quality assurance of ICS certifications and examinations. Establish and maintain partnerships with academic institutions and training providers to expand the Institute’s reach and influence. Be a key contributor to the digital transformation projects of CRM, website revamp and online exams. Membership Engagement (Supporting role) Develop and implement strategies to grow and retain the ICS membership base worldwide. Enhance the membership experience through tailored services, events, and resources. Provide professional support to members, and foster community engagement. Advocate the value of ICS membership and chartered status across the maritime sector. Marketing & Communications (Supporting role) Development and execution of marketing strategies to promote ICS’s services, programmes, and events. Enhance the Institute’s digital presence, including website content, social media, and newsletters. Strengthen relationships with industry stakeholders, partners, and media outlets. About You: The ideal candidate will bring: A strong background in education, training, or professional development, ideally within a membership organization or maritime-related sector. Proven experience in IT systems and Learning platforms. Expertise in membership engagement and retention. Strong project management and organizational skills, with a focus on delivering results. Excellent interpersonal and leadership qualities, capable of inspiring and influencing a global audience. A passion for the maritime industry and professional development. Qualifications: Degree in business, education, marketing, maritime studies, or a related field, is desirable. Professional qualifications related to shipping, logistics, or membership organizations are advantageous.
