Network Maintenance (Repair) Operator
Stirling WWTW
Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.
Scottish Water looks after Scotland's most precious natural resource. From source to tap, we guard Scotland’s reputation for refreshingly pure water, and care for our environment at the same time.
Sounds good? We are looking for motivated people to join our Water Response team, providing support in and around the Stirling area.
Our Network Maintenance (Repair) Operators are the people who go to the rescue when customers report a problem with their water supply. You’ve probably seen them out on the roads in Scottish Water vans, or cordoning off local streets to perform essential repairs. Pipes and valves are not always easily accessible – so we often have to dig up roads to get to them.
What you’ll do
1. You can expect to be out on the road most days working as part of a two-person team. You’ll be investigating problems, carrying out emergency and routine repairs and take out maintenance on our water infrastructure, as well as doing regular plant, equipment, and vehicle checks.
2. It’s vitally important that you put health and safety first – to protect yourself, your team-mates and members of the public. You’ll need to follow safe working practices and ensure that risks are fully considered.
3. You’ll be keeping colleagues up to date with issues and progress and keeping customers informed. And you’ll be tracking your activity on digital apps and reporting systems.
4. Most of the time you’ll be working outside – in all the weather that Scotland throws at us. We’ll make sure that you’re kitted out properly so that you stay warm, dry and safe.
What you’ll bring
1. Ideally you’ll have some experience in Utilities repairs. But we’ll train you on all aspects of Scotland’s water infrastructure.
2. We’re looking for friendly, patient, and solution-focused individuals who can engage with customers to solve problems, answer questions, and go the extra mile to ensure satisfaction.
3. A full DVLA-issued driving licence is essential, as you’ll be traveling around in a Scottish Water van – sometimes off the beaten track.
4. Basic IT skills are a must, as you’ll be using digital equipment and apps throughout the day - nothing fancy, but enough to get your point across clearly, quickly, and accurately.
5. You’ll need to be self-motivated, but still eager to contribute to your team’s goals.
6. You’ll need an understanding of health and safety principles for site working or skills in basic ground works.
7. A few ‘nice to haves’: it would be ideal if you have experience with HGVs or 180/360 excavators. Experience using cable avoidance tools would be good.
8. Holding a CPCS or NSRWA qualification would be great, but it’s not a must-have.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
The normal hours for this role are Monday to Friday, from 8.00 to 15.30. Once you’re trained up, you’ll also participate in a 1 in 5 standby rota for out-of-hours work (and receive a monthly standby allowance).
You’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). You can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.
When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
The not-so-small print
This role will be a Grade 4. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £27,590. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £32,420.
Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. These checks are conducted on our behalf by a third party. Don’t worry - we’ll ask your permission before starting these checks.
If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until the 22nd of April at midnight.
A few final things worth knowing…
Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!
Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.
As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.
Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
