Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BHNFT) and The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust (TRFT) are working together in partnership to develop an integrated Gastroenterology Medical unit delivering Consultant-led care across the two sites, serving a joint population of over 500,000 allowing for the opportunity to accommodate multiple sub-specialty interests and a diverse, flexible job plan to suit all applicants.
We are currently looking to appoint a Consultant into the Gastroenterology Department to support delivery of the current model and we aim to continue to expand the team further across both sites. The post holder will be expected to undertake sessions on both hospital sites.
This is a full-time, permanent post; however, applicants who would like to work flexibly or on a job share basis would also be considered.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience in all aspects of general gastroenterology including hepatology and competence in diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy and be able to care for Gastroenterology in-patients on the medical ward. Competency in ERCP would be highly desirable (but not essential).
Main duties of the job
The main duties and responsibilities of the Consultants are set out below:
1. To provide with consultant colleagues a service in Gastroenterology to the Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BFHT) and Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust (TRFT) this post would be based at TRFT.
2. To contribute to the multi-disciplinary team working.
3. To liaise with Social Services Departments, General Practitioners and Voluntary organisations as required.
4. To advise clinical colleagues on matters within his/her sphere of expertise.
5. To offer advice to medical, nursing, managerial and other staff on appropriate matters.
6. To carry out medical teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required.
7. To participate in the formal appraisal and revalidation of junior medical staff in accordance with guidelines from the Royal College of Physicians and the Regional Postgraduate Dean.
8. To contribute to postgraduate and continuing medical education activity including Continuing Professional Development.
9. To contribute if appropriate to the training of nurses, paramedical, scientific and technical staff.
10. To participate in medical audit on a regular basis and to help develop it.
11. To provide information as required from time to time for legitimate management purposes, for example to support job planning, service development etc.
12. To support the Clinical Director with appropriate advice in regard to the development of services at BFHT & TRFT.

Both Barnsley & Rotherham Hospitals have well-established departments of Gastroenterology, offering a comprehensive range of gastroenterology and endoscopic services. Consultant colleagues have interests in Endoscopy (including Endoscopic Ultrasound, Capsule endoscopy, advanced therapeutic endoscopy), Nutrition, Hepatology and Hepatobiliary medicine. There is also an expanded team of clinical nurse specialists and non-medical endoscopists. We have three liver nurse specialists doing Fibroscan and hospital/community-based clinics, four Inflammatory Bowel Disease nurses across the two sites and a nurse-led Capsule endoscopy and iron-deficiency service at Barnsley Hospital.
We offer diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy including complex EMR with the opportunity to develop this further in conjunction with Dr Said and Dr Soliman, diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI endoscopy and ERCP, capsule endoscopy and stenting for upper and lower GI malignancy.
Both sites have full JAG accreditation and are centres for bowel cancer screening in South Yorkshire. Both endoscopy units have the latest Olympus 290 series stacks and endoscopes and state-of-the-art equipment and accessories.
The Gastroenterology team are active in a wide range of research activities including participation in many NIHR portfolio studies, and there is an exciting opportunity to expand this across both sites to become a leading centre for research in both South Yorkshire and the wider Yorkshire and Humber footprint. Abstracts are regularly presented at national and international meetings.
The departments are regularly involved in teaching upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy both locally and nationally as well as delivering a well-received therapeutic endoscopy-training day as part of the South Yorkshire Gastroenterology Training programme. There is also an active endoscopy nurses monthly teaching program.
We receive students from Sheffield and Cyprus medical schools. The Job attracts an Honorary Senior Lecturer status with Sheffield medical school.
Among our Gastroenterology consultants cohort is the lead for Integrated clinical services in Gastroenterology across South Yorkshire and an ex-RCP regional advisor. Four of the consultants are faculties on national colonoscopy training courses and one has a mentorship status with the Bowel Cancer Screening program.
We work in close collaboration with the Gastroenterology colleagues in both Sheffield and Leeds teaching hospitals with easy access to tertiary referrals services.

* Experience in the management of a Gastroenterology caseload. Skill in diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI Endoscopy and Colonoscopy. Experience in GIM adequate to manage GIM ward caseload and on-call.
* Adequate experience in participating in an acute GI Bleeds rota. Willingness and ability to fulfil the key elements of the job description including the flexibility in the work pattern required.
* Possession of the clinical skills required to perform the job including general gastroenterology outpatient work.
* Ability to cope with the demands of a DGH based Consultant.
* Ability to lead and develop the service.
* Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual, multi-professional and team basis with all levels of staff.
* Ability to communicate effectively, written and orally.
* Ability to empathise.
