We work collaboratively with the multi-professional team to meet the health needs of adults with a learning disability throughout the region of NHS Highland (not including Argyll and Bute) in a range of community and acute settings. We also provide support and cover, when required, to the Mental Health Physiotherapy part of our team, who provide a service to the acute and rehabilitation wards in New Craig’s Psychiatric Hospital and Aonach Mor.
As a Band 6 Physiotherapist, the post holder will be required to:
1. Triage referrals and respond appropriately.
2. Provide specialist assessment, treatment, advice, and education for a varied caseload of clients with mild, moderate, and profound learning disabilities, the majority of whom will present with a wide range and multiple complex problems. This will draw on a broad range of physiotherapy skills and knowledge.
3. Provide a flexible approach to create a service based on patients’ needs and in the most appropriate environment.
4. Work closely with a variety of service providers and agencies throughout Highland to provide a holistic approach to the treatment of adults with a learning disability.
5. Educate, demonstrate and provide specialist advice to health care, education and social care colleagues, support staff, students, carers, families and any other personnel/agencies that come into contact with people that have a learning disability.
6. Share expertise between Learning Disabilities and Mental Health Physiotherapy when required.
7. Provide support and work within the Mental Health Team/wards as required.
8. Participate in the development of effective, responsive, evidence-based, person-centred services and the implementation of strategies/guidelines/policies.
9. Contribute to the overall planning, delivery, and evaluation of Physiotherapy services.
10. Participate in clinically related collection of statistics, administration, reviews, audits and research projects.
11. Deputize for Band 7 Physiotherapist, as necessary.
Applicants must have current HCPC registration. The ability to work independently and as part of a physiotherapy and/or multi-disciplinary team in the provision of efficient and effective physiotherapy services is required. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, together with a flexible approach and ability to adapt are also essential. Previous experience as a Band 5 Physiotherapist covering core rotations, and experience of supervising support worker staff are desirable. A full driving licence is required, with access to a car for work use being desirable.
