An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Ward Manager to support Birch Ward, an Adults Inpatient Eating Disorders Service, on a secondment/fixed term basis to cover maternity leave.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic individual who is able to work with the wider MDT, voluntary sector, and third sector organisations. Wellbeing of colleagues and working collaboratively is essential as we see this as an important aspect of keeping our staff happy at work.
The team aims to work in partnership with patients, carers, and others utilising the various services and teams we network with to work towards a level of recovery as deemed by the individual.
Internal applicants must ensure that prior to applying they have agreement from their current line manager that they can be released on a secondment basis.
Main duties of the job
1. To be professionally accountable and responsible for the delivery of the clinical service by the ward team.
2. To ensure the effective use of the rostering systems that are in place within the Trust standards.
3. To be responsible for the operational management of the team within budgeted resources and including the effective line management of the ward team.
4. To lead practice development and service development initiatives to ensure continual quality improvement as an integral part of the Trust's Quality Improvement System, using coaching as a core skill.
5. To provide an environment and culture where patients, carers, and staff can raise concerns and be confident that: they will be listened to, their views will be respected, and their concerns will be investigated where appropriate, without fear of retribution.
6. To ensure high professional standards of nursing practice in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct, with professional accountability to the Nursing and Governance Directorate.
7. To support the senior nurses/practitioners in establishing and maintaining high standards and continual improvement within the established governance framework.
8. To undertake ongoing audit of care and service delivery, underpinned by research and evidence-based practice.
9. To co-ordinate and deliver managerial supervision to ward staff and ensure all clinical staff access appropriate clinical supervision within the area of responsibility.

Job responsibilities
1. Ensures that all staff act, wherever applicable, in accordance with the Mental Health Act, Duty of Candour, and associated policies and procedures. Responsible for ensuring that all staff recognise the potential for, or signs of, patient harm, abuse, and neglect, including poor practice, report all such occurrences and take all reasonable steps to protect patients.
2. Responsible for ensuring that all staff identify and report concerns regarding the safeguarding of all those who may be at risk. Responsible for ensuring the maintenance and further development of a physical and psychological environment conducive to the provision of high-quality, trauma-informed care at all times.
3. Ensures that all staff have access to appropriate clinical supervision and mentorship and that they know how to access clinical advice on complex issues both within the team (which would include themselves) and from other disciplines and external organisations.
4. Investigates and responds to patient complaints in an effective and timely manner.
5. Through supervision and co-working in complex cases, supports the team to formulate, implement, and evaluate interventions with individuals that are person-centred and based on a range of physical and psychological approaches and therapies.
6. Provides direct clinical care interventions to support the development of practice in highly complex clinical cases.
7. To manage crises by making evidence-based decisions, supporting colleagues and service users when necessary, utilising other integral parts of the service.
8. Supports individual patients and their families/carers, providing advice and liaising with other support services to co-ordinate individual support packages.
9. Communicates accurate and comprehensive operational information at management meetings using appropriate presentation skills, to inform decision-making, in the best interests of the service.
10. Communicates sensitive or contentious information to staff regarding e.g. disciplinary matters, organisational change where the atmosphere may be hostile or antagonistic but where the communication needs to be accepted or where cooperation needs to be achieved.
11. Writes and presents reports, makes decisions and/or recommendations as appropriate and ensures robust implementation of agreed action plans.
12. Participates in leadership network groups, professional forums, and special interest groups.
13. Resolves informal complaints effectively, avoiding escalation where possible and informs the Service Manager or Modern Matron in a timely manner.
14. Handles incidents and complaints in accordance with relevant policies and procedures as required.
15. Uses judgement and analysis when investigating and making decisions with regard to staff grievances and disciplinary/capability matters.
16. During the out-of-hours roster period, uses own professional judgement to resolve issues appropriately or to escalate to the identified on-call.
17. Develops and co-ordinates training programmes for members of the clinical team, including students.
18. Responsible for the staff rota, managing shift change and annual leave requests while maintaining the required level of staffing.
19. Responsible for implementing agreed audits and service changes, monitoring information, maintaining and improving service delivery to meet quality standards within the team.
20. Supports the development of systems to ensure robust service user representation and participation in service planning and evaluation.
21. Provides clinical leadership in the sharing and transfer of good practice in relation to evidence-based practice, such as the incorporation of the recovery model principles, working across specialisms with colleagues from other services.
22. Leads the team in clinical care pathway development and implementation within own specialist area.
23. Personal duty of care to complete time sheets, mileage forms, expense claim sheets etc., accurately and in a timely manner, providing receipts as required.
24. Manages the delegated budget for the designated ward and is responsible for ensuring that the service is provided within the budgeted resources.
25. Effectively manages staffing levels on the ward including the approval of annual leave following assessment of the need to authorise the use of bank workers, overtime or agency workers and being accountable for those decisions.
26. Sets and monitors quality standards for work, reports outcomes and develops action plans to address areas of concern, responsible for ensuring implementation and evaluation of agreed action plans.
27. Responsible to the General Manager and Service Manager for individual and team performance and development.
28. Ensure relevant training is provided to all members of the clinical team, monitoring and evaluating learning outcomes, providing feedback and assessing competencies to facilitate learning in practice.
29. Practice Assessor or Practice Supervisor for students as professionally appropriate.
30. Depending on work area may be responsible for undertaking the informal stages of sickness, management, grievance, disciplinary, and capability matters.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Current professional registration with Nursing & Midwifery Council (RMN / RNMH / RNLD)
* Be educated to Master's level in a subject area relevant to the area of practice or have equivalent clinical experience to that of master's level such as working as a band 6 (or above) in relevant clinical area with significant experience - which also includes significant experience of managing people. (see below under experience), together with evidence of relevant CPD
* Be trained in Clinical Supervision and providing clinical supervision
* Be a Recognised Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor
Experience
* Significant experience of managing people
* Significant experience working with patients with complex needs in the specialist field
* Significant experience working with patients who display risk behaviours
* Working collaboratively with others (external partners, staff, service users, and their families/carers)
* Working knowledge of the legal framework and statutory obligations under the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and other relevant legislation
* Detailed understanding of Safeguarding and its application in practice
* Risk assessment and management and its application in practice.
* Working knowledge of clinical medicines management
* Developing, maintaining and auditing practice standards
* Evidence of training in Quality Improvement methodology or coaching, and/or using same in quality improvement
Knowledge
* Knowledge of current issues relating to health needs of patients in the field of practice, regionally and nationally
* Research methodology
* The Trust's Quality Improvement system (QIS) - or completion of training within agreed timescale
