An exciting opportunity has arisen in Cellular Pathology for an enthusiastic, forward-thinking senior manager to lead the North Midlands and Cheshire Pathology Service (NMCPS) Cellular Pathology Service. Based at the Royal Stoke site, you will be supported by the Consultant Head of Department, 8a laboratory lead, and 8a Mortuary lead.
The successful applicant will need to take full responsibility for the end-to-end process in Histology, including the administrative function along with oversight of the four hospital mortuaries (two of which are body stores) across the network.
We are looking for an experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with a master’s degree (or equivalent) and proven technical experience, as well as a management and leadership qualification to continue to develop and lead our Cellular Pathology service.
NMCPS Cellular Pathology processes more than 80,000 surgical cases, 7,000 non-gynaecological cytology cases, and 800 postmortems (the majority for H M Coroner) per annum. The laboratory is modern, well equipped, and has excellent facilities including those for immunohistochemistry and rapid processing, as well as FISH and Molecular services.
Our vision is to deliver an innovative, high-performing, and high-quality Pathology service that will be responsive to the needs and requirements of its users.
You will be supported by a strong and experienced pathology management team to continue developing the laboratory service and expanding the biomedical scientist dissection and advanced practice reporting strategy.
As part of the network business case, a significant investment in Sakura SMART automation has been agreed, as well as a joint Laboratory Information System (LIMS) across the network. The LIMS project is now complete, and Digital Pathology is currently being rolled out.
We advocate “lean principles” and have introduced 7-day working in the laboratory. Our plans to expand digital pathology will further underpin successful and efficient flexible working, teaching, and research.
The North Midlands and Cheshire Pathology Services (NMCPS), formed in December 2020, was a collaboration between The University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM), Mid Cheshire, and East Cheshire NHS Trusts (MCHFT). UHNM is the host provider of the network. NMCPS is a part of a wider Pathology network namely North 8 (N8), which includes Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust (SaTH). The collaboration between the entities has yet to be formalised, but it is expected that the postholder will also work closely with the Cellular Pathology SaTH team.
NMCPS aims to provide a world-class integrated diagnostic service, where patients receive the highest standards of care and the best people come to learn, work, and research.
UHNM has two sites: Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital. We provide a full range of general acute hospital services for people living in and around Staffordshire and beyond. The Trust also provides specialised services for 3 million people in a wider area, including neighbouring counties and North Wales.
The Trust would consider a flexible working pattern to support a different work-life balance.
A detailed job description and main responsibilities can be found in our job pack which is attached in the supporting documents.
