Job overview
Our Southend team is looking to appoint a full-time Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a specialist interest in Maternal Medicine.
Responsibilities include:
1. Providing ante-natal clinics with a special interest in maternal medicine and diabetes.
2. Providing general gynaecology service including seeing young adolescents with gynaecology problems.
3. Providing a service for 2ww and gynae-oncology patients.
4. Covering every other Friday on call for Obstetrics and Gynaecology and also prospective cover.
5. Actively involved in clinical governance aspects of the directorate and the trust including risk management and CNST.
6. Taking up leadership roles within the directorate and playing an active role in the operational and strategic management of the department.
7. Providing leadership and participating in Clinical Audit programmes.
Main duties of the job
1. Provide a consultant-led service in Gynaecology.
2. Work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team to offer expert opinion and considerate advice to women with complications in any stage of pregnancy and acute gynaecology.
3. Develop the Obstetrics and Gynaecology service by working closely with other colleagues to standardise pathways of care.
4. Provide training for trainees in the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
5. Evolve and write, in line with Trust governance policies, pathways for patients seen within the Obstetrics and Gynaecology service.
6. Work with the multidisciplinary team to undertake a senior role in the general provision of Obstetric and Gynaecological Services.
7. Provide senior leadership in the management of high-risk patients antenatally, intrapartum and postpartum in close co-operation with other specialties.
8. Provide gynaecological oncological services in outpatients, theatre and emergency care.
9. Facilitate the triage of emergency gynaecology operations as per NCEPOD recommendations.
10. Consultant in Obstetrics and attend all theatre cases to perform surgery, unless satisfied a trainee is competent to perform the operation with indirect supervision.
11. Assessment and delivery of immediate medical attention of deteriorating elective postop gynaecology patients.
12. Support the Emergency Surgical Consultant with a consultant gynaecological opinion/ultrasound.

Minimum Requirements
* Entry onto the GMC specialist register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of application.
* MRCOG.
* ATSM in Maternal Medicine.
* Diploma/degree in minimal access surgery.
* ATSM in Benign Gynaecology – open and laparoscopy.
Experience & Knowledge
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the specialty.
* Comprehensive knowledge in the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems.
* Good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT.
* Experience of organising and developing a service.
* Previous experience or proven interest in teaching/medical education.
* Experience in running antenatal clinic for women with high BMI.
