VAT Manager | St Albans/London | Up to £75k
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a VAT Manager to join a well-established and reputable company based in St Albans/London. Our client, experts in their field, are a modern and innovative professional services company.
This standalone role will include acting as a technical specialist in relation to VAT and indirect tax matters and taking an active role in enhancing the firm’s offering through identifying and maximising opportunities with existing clients.
It will also involve developing new client relationships through networking and strategic business development. Experience of European VAT issues and Customs Duty will be essential as the UK continues to negotiate and transitions its departure from the European Union, together with ensuring the firm’s clients are fully advised regarding any UK VAT.
As this role will provide support across the firm, the VAT Manager would be expected to work from both our St Albans and London offices.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Take responsibility for the management and development of the firm’s VAT services and use technical skills and expertise to contribute to the firm’s business profile in this area.
2. This will include acting as a technical specialist, providing advice and support to the wider business on VAT issues and identifying potential tax planning opportunities for clients.
3. Develop the firm’s internal processes and procedures in relation to VAT work, addressing areas of risk and improving consistency of approach in relation to VAT compliance work.
4. Provide management support as required, ensuring appropriate work is allocated, work is supervised effectively to ensure quality and efficiency and regular feedback on performance is provided.
5. Actively promote the firm externally, initiating, attending and reviewing business development activities with clients and referral bodies.
6. Attend and take an active role in meetings with the Partners on an as required basis, reporting to the Partners on the development of the firm’s VAT services and offering and contributing to discussions relating to the firm’s marketing, finances and wider strategy where appropriate.
7. Contribute to staff and team development, through knowledge sharing, team meetings or other appropriate forums.
8. 90% of work will be allocated from existing clients, however we welcome the opportunity for this role to develop their own portfolio and grow the VAT offering, hence the opportunity to progress to Director over time.
9. Other ad-hoc duties as may be required from time to time in order to assist the smooth running of the practice or provide additional assistance to clients and the wider department.
What the employer is looking for:
1. Significant VAT/indirect tax experience gained in a similar and respected environment, with a relevant professional qualification (CTA/ACA/ACCA or similar).
2. Strong technical and commercial knowledge and understanding of the relevant market, including experience of European VAT issues and Customs Duty.
3. An ability to introduce new business to the firm through bringing in a client portfolio or a proven ability to expand an existing business stream through client service and business development activities.
4. Strong interpersonal skills, including an ability to communicate confidently with colleagues and clients and an ability to quickly build and maintain rapport.
5. Drive and self-motivation to achieve personal and strategic objectives of the firm.
6. Adaptable and flexible and able to demonstrate a commitment to the firm and its goals.
7. An ability to think clearly and stay focussed under pressure, managing multiple deadlines.
8. Strong leadership and management skills, with an ability to manage people effectively to raise performance and build engagement.
