A nurse working on a Day Surgery Ward plays a critical role in delivering high-quality patient care in a fast-paced environment. This position involves pre-operative and post-operative care for patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures that do not require overnight hospital stays. The nurse ensures patient safety, supports surgical teams, provides education to patients and their families, and facilitates smooth patient discharge processes.
There is a great opportunity for learning and development supported by the Clinical Nurse Educators and the nursing team whilst working alongside the multi-disciplinary team.
Pre-operative Care:
Assess and prepare patients for surgery, including reviewing medical histories, allergies, and current medications.
Provide patients with pre-operative instructions and ensure they understand the procedure, risks, and necessary post-operative care.
Administer pre-operative medications as prescribed and start IV lines as required.
Post-operative Care:
Monitor and manage patients in the recovery area, assessing vital signs, pain levels, and overall recovery status.
Provide wound care, change dressings, and manage drainage systems as needed.
Administer medications for pain relief, nausea, and other post-operative symptoms.
Educate patients and their families on post-discharge care, including wound management, medication regimens, and signs of potential complications.
Patient Education and Discharge:
Ensure patients and their families are informed about post-operative care instructions and follow-up appointments.
Coordinate with other healthcare professionals to ensure a smooth discharge process.
Complete necessary documentation related to patient care, including discharge summaries.
