Biomedical Scientist Virology (Registered/Specialist)

A vacancy has arisen for a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly and hardworking team within the Virology department at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, which forms part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Network.
We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist with a flexible approach to work. Participation in the out of hours service is an essential requirement, once deemed competent in all relevant areas.
Applicants must possess an IBMS accredited degree in Biomedical Sciences, have relevant experience in Microbiology, and hold current registration with the HCPC (Band 5/Band 6 BMS). Ideally, candidates will have completed the IBMS Specialist diploma (Band 6 BMS) or be ready for assessment.
We will also consider applicants without a specialist portfolio or extensive experience if no suitable band 6 level applications are received. In these circumstances, we would appoint to AFC band 5.
Please also note this vacancy is banded dependent upon applicants experience relevant to this post. The banding of the successful applicant/s will start at Band 5 unless applicants meet the necessary threshold of skills and experience required to start on Band 6.
Main duties of the job
* To carry out complex analytical and processing procedures
* To be responsible for the production of accurate and timely Laboratory testing
* To maintain high scientific and technical standards
* Promote and maintain a high standard of relevant education and training
* Adhere to all STH Trust, SYBP and Departmental Policies
* Perform a range of Microbial analytical methodologies
* Participate in molecular techniques according to standard operation procedures.
* Develop specialist Microbiology knowledge to enable interpretation of a wide range of complex patient investigations.
* Develop manual dexterity skills in order to perform accurate and precise processing and analysis.
* Interpret clinical information for relevant detection and/or identification of pathogens.
* To plan own workload effectively and efficiently to ensure section workloads
* Concentrate for extended periods of time whilst performing the analysis
* Assist in planned Research and Development.
* To work within the biological safety Containment level 3 laboratories whilst adhering to health & safety requirements.
* To assist in a specialist area such as Quality, Health and Safety, Internal Quality Control, Audit training etc.

Education and Qualifications
* IBMS accredited BSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent
* Registered with HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist
* Completion of IBMS post graduate registration portfolio or equivalent
* Commitment to complete and maintain Mandatory Training and required Laboratory competencies
* Commitment to complete the relevant Specialist BMS IBMS portfolio
* (Band 6) IBMS Specialist Diploma in a relevant specialist subject
* (Band 6) Commitment to continuous professional development required to maintain HCPC registration
* Evidence of continued CPD including relevant courses with regards to H&S, leadership, quality or training
