Run in three community centres on behalf of three secondary schools across Newport, Aspire is an alternative education programme to support, encourage and inspire young learners in years 10 and 11 who are disengaged from mainstream school, helping them to achieve their qualifications in a different environment, suited to their needs. Through a focus on wellbeing and providing inclusive extra-curricular activities, the Aspire team help to break down barriers for these learners through appropriate means, not only for their education but in preparation for life after school. Our Teaching Assistants job purpose is to support the Aspire learning programme for young people, including operational activities in a community facility, supporting pupils to achieve in partnership with Newport City Council (e.g., Education, Schools, Youth Service, Youth Justice Service), alongside Newport Live colleagues, working proactively with a wide range of partners and our communities.Key Responsibilities are:To provide high quality learning support for all young people on the Aspire programme, ensuring learners/young people achieve agreed qualifications and personal development outcomes.
To be responsible for the safe preparation of the learning environment, equipment, and session delivery, as required by the Aspire Community Youth Development Officer / Aspire Senior Youth Development Officer (Curriculum Tutor).
To develop a one-to-one mentoring relationship with learners/young people, when necessary, who might require support to achieve their goals.
To support the use of ICT/digital assets in learning activities and develop learners/young peoples’ competence and independence in its use.
Participate in meetings with parents/guardians and contribute to independent development plans, in partnership with the Aspire Community Youth Development Officer / Aspire Senior Youth Development Officer (Curriculum Tutor).
Promote positivity and respect amongst learners/young people, managing and supporting behaviour and engagement, whilst being positive, approachable, inclusive, and professional at all times,
Provide effective feedback to learners/young people in relation to progress and the recognition of achievement.
Ensure Newport Live’s vision, mission and values are understood and implemented.
Be aware of and comply with the policies and procedures relating to inclusion, safeguarding, health and safety, confidentiality, and data protection.
