As a registered Midwife, you will support the Bereavement Lead Midwife to lead the service across maternity, neonate and gynaecology. The role will include supporting families through a medical termination of pregnancy, late miscarriage, and when required, earlier miscarriages, intrauterine fetal death and neonatal deaths, including making valuable memory making for the family. The post holder will also support staff through this process with the completion of relevant paperwork and includes clinical support as required.
As part of the bereavement team, you will support with training and education of staff, assisting with writing guidelines and standing operating procedures (SOPs) and in the absence of the Bereavement Lead Midwife, attend relevant meetings and present papers as required.
Main duties of the job
* Provide professional care, support and practical advice to families experiencing a pregnancy loss through miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death, sudden death and staff caring for them.
* Involved offering early reassurance scans for subsequent pregnancies following a loss.
* Liaise with external agencies in improving bereavement facilities and mementoes available to families.
* Assist with keeping bereavement stores stocked.
* Provide support and advice to women and families who have been diagnosed with a fetal abnormality and act as an advocate in their decision to continue or terminate the pregnancy.
* Work in collaboration with the Screening team.
* Develop professional working relationship with other services who are involved in some aspect of bereavement care.
* This includes screening midwife, perinatal mental health midwife, infant feeding, bereavement services, mortuary, registration office, neonatal and gynaecology team and consultants.
* Involve external agencies for additional support such as SANDS, Miscarriage association and MNISA.
* Assist with providing training and education to all staff involved in bereavement care.
* Involved with auditing and upholding standards from the NBCP (National Bereavement Care Pathway).
* Responsible for ensuring women are aware of their options including funerals and investigations.
* Involved in discussing post-mortem with families and obtaining consent for this.
