1. To co-ordinate the operational work of the clinical technician medicines management service ensuring optimum use of technician and pharmacist time.
2. To regularly plan and allocate the wards and teams between the medicines management technicians to provide adequate cover for each activity, prioritising and directing as required to ensure that optimum service delivery is maintained.
3. To provide education and training for student pharmacy technicians and foundation trainee pharmacists within the clinical medicines management service role and generally for pharmacy support workers.
4. To identify the need for, prepare and revise Standard Operating Procedures and other policy documentation relating to the clinical medicines management service to ensure working practices comply with legal and quality standards.
5. To propose, develop and implement policies and procedures for the clinical medicines management services to develop the service for the benefit of pharmacy staff, ward/team staff, service users and carers. Plan the implementation of changes in the policies and manage the change appropriately.
6. Participation in medication history screening on wards, often involving problem solving, communication with service users, carers, GPs and other health professionals.
7. Participate in medicines management schemes on the wards (including patient's own drugs (PODs), self-administration, medicines reconciliation and non-stock top ups in other areas).
8. Undertake counselling of service users about their medicines and provide information and advice about medicines to service users, carers and other health professionals e.g., medical and nursing staff.
9. Have active involvement in discharge planning for service users ensuring a seamless medicines pathway into primary care.
10. Participate in Trust wide medicines management initiatives.
11. Provide education and training about medicines management to nursing staff and other professionals.
12. Contribute to the safe and efficient running of pharmacy clozapine services.
13. To undertake dispensing of medicines including using the pharmacy labelling and stock control computer system for inpatient and outpatients, dispensary accuracy checking of prescriptions and patient counselling, as appropriate.
14. To ensure good stock control in the dispensary and on the wards in conjunction with the pharmacy support workers and the dispensary manager.
15. Manage and supervise the pharmacy support workers in the absence of the Dispensary Manager.
16. Dispense medicines and provide annual leave or sickness cover for other team members if required.
Person specification
Education / Qualifications
Essential criteria
* BTEC/NVQ3 Pharmaceutical Sciences or CGLI/Apothecaries Hall pre 1985 or equivalent.
* Accredited Checking Technician Qualification.
* Registration with GPhC.
Desirable criteria
* Medicines Management qualification (to degree level or equivalent).
* Patient counselling qualification.
Experience
Essential criteria
* Significant post qualification experience.
* Experience in hospital pharmacy, multidisciplinary team working, research, clinical trials or audit, pharmacy standard operating procedure development.
Desirable criteria
* Mental health speciality.
* Project/change management role.
* Management of resources.
Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria
* Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, listening).
* Experience of multidisciplinary team working.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with other staff and service users.
Desirable criteria

Knowledge and understanding

* Evidence of specialist knowledge relating to technical pharmacy issues and procedures.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
