Part-Time Caretaker / Handyman Location: Taunton, Somerset Salary: £12.64 – £13.05 per hour Contract Type: Part-Time, Term-Time Only Working Hours: 15 – 20 hours per week (18:00 – 21:00, Monday to Friday – negotiable) About the Role We are looking for a reliable and proactive Caretaker / Handyman to join our school’s Estates Team. The successful candidate will play a vital role in ensuring a safe, secure, and well-maintained environment for students, staff, and visitors. This is a varied role, covering general maintenance, security, cleaning, and site safety. Key Responsibilities - Secure the school buildings and grounds at the end of each day - Carry out routine security checks and report maintenance issues - Perform general maintenance, including basic plumbing, carpentry, decorating, and glazing - Keep outdoor areas clean and tidy, including playgrounds, paths, and drains - Respond to maintenance and repair requests from staff - Undertake cleaning duties in specified areas, including emergency cleaning when required - Maintain and replace light fittings within safe height limits - Assist with sports lettings and site security in the absence of the Sports Development Officer - Conduct routine minibus maintenance checks and, if able, drive vehicles for fuel, MOT, and servicing - Ensure compliance with Health & Safety regulations, including risk assessments and manual handling procedures - Support external hirers and ensure they follow school letting policies and safeguarding procedures What We’re Looking For - Previous experience in a caretaking, maintenance, or facilities role - Strong DIY and handyman skills (basic plumbing, carpentry, decorating, etc.) - Ability to work independently, problem-solve, and manage tasks efficiently - Good understanding of Health & Safety practices - Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, and external visitors - A flexible and proactive approach to work - A valid UK driving licence (preferred) What We Offer - A supportive working environment in a friendly and welcoming school community - Competitive hourly rate with regular working hours - Opportunities for training and development - School holidays off, allowing for a great work-life balance - Access to school facilities during working hours
