An 18 month associate position is available to investigate development and applications of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) to study a wide variety systems. The University of Manchester hosts the UK’s National Research Facility for EPR Resonance and as such the successful applicant will have access to the largest range of EPR equipment in the UK, with pulsed and continuous wave instrumentation operating at 1 to 34 GHz. Dr Bowen’s group is particularly interested in the development and application of light-induced EPR for both the study of structure and function in biological systems and also for potential applications in molecular quantum information processing. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to both join existing projects and also to develop their own ideas as part of this role. The researcher will work on projects related to light induced EPR methods. In particular it is envisaged they will help to lead on developing the application of light induced Pulsed Dipolar Spectroscopy EPR methods for applications in near native biological environments and/or in quantum information processing applications. The post-doctoral researcher will also contribute to other research activities in the group focused around EPR helping to supervise and train less experienced group members. They will also have some responsibility for helping group members and users of the EPR facility with setting up optical excitation methods including lasers for use in optically activated EPR experiments. The post-doctoral researcher will also be given time and flexibility to develop their own research ideas as part of this role in discussion with Dr Bowen to ensure that suitable facilities are available. The researcher will prepare reports and deliver presentations both internally and, as appropriate, externally at conferences on the work conducted. The post-doctoral researcher will prepare manuscripts of papers emanating from the work.
